Job description

Job summary

The post-holder will deliver, develop, and support clinical pharmacy services across various specialties within the pharmacy department on a rotational basis. This will be in accordance with priorities set by the lead pharmacist for each specialist area and the clinical site lead pharmacist.

At the Royal Free Hospital, the post holder will cover areas including Patient Services, Clinical Services/E+T, Cardiology, Surgery, ITU, Medicine, Gastroenterology, Commissioning, Amyloidosis, and HIV, with the aim of enhancing knowledge and skills and progressing towards a more senior role.

Opportunities exist to work in specific clinical specialties depending on the site. The role includes exposure to directorate work such as DTC evaluations, high-cost drugs, and audits. Clinical commitment is expected during all rotations.

In summary, the post-holder will be expected to:

  1. Work as a clinical pharmacist to ensure the safe, clinically effective, and cost-efficient use of medicines.
  2. Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to enhance patient care.
  3. Participate in drug usage reviews, audits, and cost-efficiency programs.
  4. Line manage and support junior pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
  5. Engage in ongoing education and training.

Main duties include:

  1. Delivering high-quality pharmacy services, including drug supply, review of complex medication regimens, medicine reconciliation, and discharge planning.
  2. Participating actively in consultant rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  3. Making evidence-based decisions with patients and professionals to improve outcomes.
  4. Identifying and minimizing medication-related risks within specialties.
  5. Ensuring compliance with local and national policies, including medicines policy and NICE guidelines.
  6. Participating in specialist pharmacy clinics as required.
  7. Participating in out-of-hours, weekend, and bank holiday services, including responsibility for securing the department and providing advice on medicines and emergency supplies during on-call hours.
