Job overview

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Paediatric Practice Development Nurse to join our Paediatric Services team at Band 7.

This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled paediatric nurse with strong clinical, educational and leadership experience to make a real difference to the development of our nursing workforce and the care we provide to children, young people and their families.

The post holder will provide expert clinical leadership and specialist paediatric advice, while leading education, training, induction, preceptorship and clinical skills development. You will also lead and support quality improvement, audit, governance and the implementation of evidence-based practice and national guidance.

Main duties of the job

You will provide expert clinical leadership and specialist paediatric advice across our services, acting as a visible role model for safe, evidence-based and family-centred care.

We are looking for an experienced paediatric nurse who is an excellent communicator, teacher and facilitator, with strong clinical leadership and critical-thinking skills.

You will be approachable and supportive, while confident to constructively challenge and influence others. You will need to work autonomously, manage competing priorities and respond flexibly to changing service needs.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will work across Paediatric Services at Watford General Hospital and Hemel Hempstead, providing practice development, education and clinical support in collaboration with the Paediatric Senior Nursing Team.

  • Working with the Paediatric Matron and wider senior nursing team to support delivery of safe, effective and high-quality paediatric care.
  • Developing effective working relationships with Ward Managers, nursing and medical teams, AHPs, governance, IPC, safeguarding, education and workforce teams, and external partners.
  • Supporting the implementation of agreed clinical, educational and service priorities across paediatric areas.
  • Contributing to workforce development, clinical governance, patient safety and service improvement.
  • Maintaining effective links with educational institutions, regional networks and professional organisations.
  • Supporting appropriate communication, escalation and coordination across services and professional boundaries.
  • Working flexibly across paediatric areas and Trust sites according to service requirements.
Person specification
Education
  • Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
  • Relevant post-registration experience in paediatric nursing
  • APLS or equivalent certification
Knowledge
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current paediatric nursing practice, including the care of acutely and critically unwell children and young people
Experience
  • Significant post-registration experience within paediatric nursing, including experience within a PICU/paediatric critical care environment
