Job description

A Vacancy at Barking Havering and Redbridge Univ Hospitals NHS Trust.

Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals Trust are actively recruiting for a motivated and dynamic Band 7 Occupational Therapist to join our Integrated Therapies Team for the Acute Care of the Elderly wards at Queen’s Hospital in Romford, Essex.

We are looking for somebody who is passionate about supporting change, enjoys working in fast-paced acute healthcare, and is seeking a challenge in a supportive, cutting-edge environment. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, excellent communication, and team management skills. The focus is on early assessment and intervention to support high-quality patient care, requiring rapid and robust decision-making.

You should possess specialist knowledge of geriatric and acute elderly conditions, pathologies, and occupational therapy management across various medical specialties, including respiratory and neurology. Flexibility is essential as you will support other areas within the wider Medical Team to meet service demands. We support Continuing Professional Development, and you will be supported directly by the Clinical Lead for the Care of the Elderly, with peer support provided.

Role Responsibilities:

  1. Provide a specialist standard of Occupational Therapy service to patients within the acute elderly units, focusing on assessment and maximizing patient potential through a holistic approach.
  2. Offer highly specialist guidance, advice, and education to other members of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) related to your specialist area.
  3. Lead in planning, coordinating, delivering, and evaluating the Occupational Therapy service in your area, in conjunction with Clinical Leads.
  4. Teach, supervise, and appraise peers, including Band 6, Band 5, Student Occupational Therapists, and Therapy Assistants.

We are an organization committed to continuous improvement, driven by a determination to deliver high-quality care that satisfies our patients. Recent developments include opening two new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH), and our CEO, Matthew Trainer, being named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal.

Our main sites are KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford, with busy emergency departments serving over 330,000 visitors last year. We are actively campaigning for funding to transform the A&E at Queen’s and eliminate corridor care.

Our patients benefit from initiatives like the Women’s Health Hub in Ilford, the Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch, and Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch. These CDCs operate 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing an additional 88,000 scans annually.

Our staff, from diverse backgrounds, are committed to flexible working. Over 400 staff members participate in Ofsted-accredited apprenticeship programs. We are proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We are introducing an electronic patient record system to enhance staff efficiency and patient care. Moving to a 7-day service aligns with NHS priorities, and we seek a candidate who will thrive in this working pattern. If you meet the outlined skills and seek a rewarding role where you can influence and develop services while being supported and valued, please apply today.
