Job description

Description of the duties

1. General Duties

1.1 Role models exemplary behaviour in terms of conduct, attitude, performance, when delivering The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism.

1.2 Demonstrates ability to effectively support experts with lived experience co-trainers, ensuring they are fully included and supported in the delivery of the sessions, helping them to develop skills and confidence.

1.3 Undertakes a supervisory role for expert with lived experience co-trainers, ensuring appropriate support, leadership and coaching in line with organisational expectations.

1.4 Demonstrates the ability to co-deliver training sessions. The sessions will utilise a range of methods, including traditional training delivery, group discussions, and film.

1.5 Demonstrates best practice facilitating training.

1.6 Regularly teaches large groups – multi-professional, multi-agency.

1.7 Employs learning interventions that are learner centred.

1.8 Ensures all the learning outcomes are fully achieved.

1.9 Recognises and addresses the needs of individuals and the group prior to, during and after the session.

1.10Helps to keep participants and staff safe and confident in their surroundings and acts on safeguarding and health and safety concerns in line with organisation policies.

1.11Appropriately challenges poor practice.

1.12Keeps up to date with current and emerging thinking in health and social care practice, learning disability and autism, laws of consent (UK), The Mental Capacity Act 2005, The Human Rights Act 1998, The Autism Act 2009, Do not attempt cardiovascular resuscitation case law (DNACPR), LeDeR and other associated data.

2. Communication

2.1 Be a key member of the team as well as supporting effective communication, both internally and externally.

2.2 Supports to development of a culture that values diversity and promotes equality and inclusion.

3. Organisation and Planning

3.1 Deliver against organisational objectives, achieving quality outcomes, prioritising own workload and working to tight deadlines.

3.2 Develop plans which support the upscaling and ongoing training roll out, being responsive to necessary changes, reviewing and making adjustments as required.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
  • Educated to degree level in relevant subject or equivalent level of experience of working at a similar level in specialist area.
  • Knowledge and experience of a variety of learning and development methodologies and their application, in particular coaching, action learning, and facilitation.
Desirable criteria
  • Oliver McGowan training facilitator approval
  • A relevant teaching qualification such as Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS), Multi-professional support of learning and assessment in practice, or an equivalent.
Experience and Knowledge
Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of proficient and successful delivery of face-to-face training in health and social care, or similar environment.
  • Has excellent up to date working knowledge of the fields of autism and learning disability and is familiar with current issues.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the learning cycle and its application and experience in leading and developing quality practice in others.
  • Robust experience, understanding and application of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 within in a health and/or social care environment or similar.
  • Robust experience and understanding of the Human Rights Act 1998, the Autism Act 2009, The Equality Act 2010, UK legal valid consent laws and DNACPR case law.
  • Previous experience in similar role in public sector and a good understanding of the health and social care environment and roles and responsibilities within it.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of delivering Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training.
  • Experience delivering high quality services to people with a learning disability and autistic people in a professional role such as RNLD, OT or social worker, or can demonstrate an equivalent level of skills, knowledge and experience.

  • Clear communicator with excellent presentation skills; capable of constructing and delivering clear ideas and concepts concisely and accurately for diverse audiences. Skills for communication on complex matters and difficult situations, requiring persuasion and influence.
  • Skills for nurturing key relationships and maintaining networks. Ability to persuade and influence learners’ attitudes at a range of levels. Ability to co-facilitate training delivery with experts with lived experience.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret information and complex facts, including in situations which may arise during training delivery, pre-empt and evaluate issues, and recommend an appropriate course of action to address the issues. Problem solving skills and ability to respond to sudden unexpected demands.
  • Attention to detail combined with the ability to extract key messages and communicate these to a diverse audience. Independent thinker with demonstrated good judgement, problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Takes decisions on difficult and contentious issues where they may be a number of courses of action. Ability to analyse and interpret information and complex facts, including in situations which may arise during training delivery, pre-empt and evaluate issues, and recommend an appropriate course of action to address the issues.
  • Problem solving skills and ability to respond to sudden unexpected demands. Strategic thinking – ability to anticipate.

  • Experience of supporting others to plan for success, including supporting any reasonable adjustments within the team. This may include support with travel planning, venue changes and / or staffing changes.
  • Ability to plan ahead to ensure all documentation is available in an accessible format for all team members. Experience of reflecting on feedback received, and making changes to process where necessary.

Essential criteria
  • Empathy for individuals who have experienced mental health problems and ability to cope with behaviour which may be challenging at times. An ability to work flexibly and independently in accordance with the needs of the role
  • An ability to travel to dispersed locations without restriction. An ability to deliver training which may include distressing and / or emotional content. Providing support to co-trainers who may be impacted by delivery of the training.
  • An ability to signpost support to delegates who may be emotionally impacted by the training. An ability to maintain confidentiality and trust.
  • Adaptability, flexibility and ability to cope with uncertainty and change. Commitment to continuing professional development.
