An exciting new opportunity has arisen across our Birmingham Heartlands and Good Hope Hospital sites to appoint a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to work within our dynamic and experienced acute Speech and Language therapy team on a fixed term contract basis for 12 months.

This post will have a clinical focus on acute in-patient care across our general medical and elderly hospital wards on these hospital sites with some support also being provided to our off site ward at the Norman Power centre. This is an excellent opportunity for a developing specialist with a clinical interest in acute care who is further wanting to advance and develop their skill set.

Main duties of the job

You will be welcomed into a large and supportive therapy team with excellent training and development opportunities as well as a robust supervision and appraisal system. You will have the opportunity to work alongside highly specialist staff and have access to regular videofluoroscopy & FEES clinics. The successful candidate will have suitable post graduate clinical experience, demonstrable interest in acute care, with competency in both communication and dysphagia management.

Applicants must be organised, flexible and adaptable and able to problem solve and apply clinical reasoning effectively. Applicants must also have good experience of close multi-professional working and must demonstrate excellent communication skills. You must be able to manage and prioritise your own caseload and have experience of supporting and supervising the work of therapy support workers/assistants.

Participation in our weekend service will also be required.

Full-time and part-time positions are available, and we\'re open to discuss flexible working arrangements.

Qualifications
  • Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
  • Completion of RCSLT newly qualified practitioner competencies
  • Current registration with Health Professions Council
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Evidence of leadership training
  • Attendance at Clinical Educators Course
  • VF / FEES trained
Experience
  • Postgraduate experience in relevant clinical areas
  • Competence in advanced dysphagia and communication assessment and management
  • Well-established knowledge of assessment tools and a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions relevant to the client group
  • Understanding of the roles of other professionals (relevant to the client group)
  • Experience of teaching SLT students
  • Experience of mentoring/ training junior staff
  • Experience of involvement in Clinical Governance/ Audit programme
  • Awareness of national drivers, policies and procedures (relevant to the client group) and their implications for SLT
  • Awareness of current research relevant to the client group
  • Understanding of the principles of clinical governance /audit
