Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a committed and energetic Ward Sister/Charge Nurse to join Redlynch Ward. We are looking for a person with background in acute medicine, an interest in Gastro-Intestinal Nursing and some experience of dealing with patients who may have challenging behaviours and substance misuse. There will be a full induction into Gastroenterology, with the opportunity to develop within the Trust with the B6 competencies and study days.

This post requires a qualified nurse with at least 24 months of post registration experience in an acute setting. The nurse must be able to show evidence of recent CPD.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a commitment to excellence and compassion in all aspects of the job description.

The candidate’s shortlisted will provided with a scenario which they will need to be able to prioritise and evidence, followed by questions.

Informal visits are encouraged if shortlisted.

Main duties of the job

Patient care: You will take overall responsibility for all patients on your ward ensuring they are appropriately assessed, management plans are in place and the care they receive is effective, compassionate and of the best quality. You will regularly take charge of the ward and be responsible for supervising others and evaluating the care patients receive.

Information resources: You must document care given, supervise the documentation others record and in adherence to the NMC standards for record keeping ensure patient records are accurate.

Human Resources: As an NMC registrant you will continue to develop yourself, support, mentor, supervise and teach junior staff, teach others including nursing assistants, pre and post registration students, newly qualified nurses and newly appointed staff. You will actively seek feedback on your performance, contribute to your appraisals and provide constructive feedback to those you supervise. You will keep staff records up to date.

As a senior member of the ward team you will develop a good understanding of HR processes in order to manage the performance of yourself, individuals and the team.

Experience

  • The post holder will be a first level registered nurse with a Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Degree in Nursing and/or evidence of continuing professional development equivalent to post-graduate diploma level.
  • Minimum 2 years experience at Band 5.
  • Evidence of being caring and compassionate with a good understanding of managing patients with complex needs
  • QCF Assessor Award or Mentorship
  • NMC Registered

Skills

  • Ability to assess patients, plan care for a group of patients, deliver care and evaluate the effectiveness of care given
  • Good analytical skills for assessing and interpreting acute and other complex patient conditions, recognise deterioration and take appropriate action
  • Leadership skills including good interpersonal and communication skills.
