Job summary

As a senior staff nurse, you will be required to have well-developed triage skills and experience coordinating different areas of the emergency department, including the resuscitation areas.

Our department has a co-located Urgent Care Centre, a children's Emergency Department, CDU, and SDEC service. We provide our own accredited emergency care course for both adults and children, which includes level 1 trauma and can be taken at both degree and master's levels.

This is why we have an ED-specific Clinical Practice Education (CPE) team dedicated to the development of our nurses to support a modern career framework. You will be supported every step of the way by our senior nurses, the CPE team, and your colleagues.

We offer a variety of development opportunities, including:

  • University Accredited Emergency Care Course (in both Adults & Paediatrics)
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) and/or Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS)
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support / ATNC

Main duties of the job

As a senior staff nurse, you will be required to support the senior and junior team in ensuring the needs of our patients are met through the delivery of high-quality care. The role involves working as part of a large multidisciplinary team, including the ED medical team, clinical practice educators, safeguarding, mental health liaison team, and clinical specialties.

The senior staff nurse will assist their team leader with managing their own team of nurses and ensuring they meet their potential. You will have the opportunity to work in all areas, including children's ED, to increase your skill set and competency.

You will be actively involved in retention and recruitment and will also be responsible for link roles, giving you the opportunity to drive change and improve standards.

Job responsibilities

To be responsible for the unsupervised assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation, and evaluation of plans of care, ensuring high standards of evidence-based care using a defined model of care.

To undertake all nursing procedures in accordance with Trust policies and ensure that these procedures and policies are understood and adhered to by all staff within own management responsibility.

To communicate with patients and significant others with empathy and reassurance regarding assessment, care, and treatment.

To maintain accurate and comprehensive nursing records using appropriate documentation.

To facilitate early discharge planning, enabling appropriate arrangements to be in place for patients leaving hospital, making referrals, and providing information to community services as required.
