It is an exciting opportunity for a qualified HCPC registered Occupational Therapist with relevant rehabilitation experience to work across the multidisciplinary teams to provide high quality assessment and interventions in hospital and community settings. The clinical input will vary depending on service demands and you will support areas with vacancies, maternity leave or to achieve activity targets.

The services are based at:

• West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre - Specialist clinics, access to communication and technology, amputee rehab Birmingham wheelchair service and posture and mobility service .
• Moseley Hall Hospital - Inpatient Neurological Rehabilitation and stroke units, Birmingham Neurological Rehabilitation Team and Moor Green outpatient brain injury unit, Early supported discharge team.

The delivery of rehabilitation programmes and OT intervention can take place within the service base, client’s home or in the community within a local Birmingham and/or regional West Midlands remit. In some services this will involve moving around the community daily without direct support on a daily basis with potentially long periods of driving

Main duties of the job

The peripatetic post will support the rehabilitation services within the Adult and Specialist Rehabilitation Division (ASR) which provides a wide range of services for people living in Birmingham and all parts of the West Midlands.

To work as part of the interdisciplinary teams within the rehabilitation services , effectively assessing clients with complex needs, considering their function, disability and health, taking into account all environments in which they live and work.

To provide assessment and analysis of rehabilitation, social and care needs of complex patients as part of the Inter-Disciplinary Teams, referring on to outside agencies / professionals in discussion with senior members of staff.

Identify Occupational Therapy goals and plan / formulate intervention that is evidence based in conjunction with the client, their careers, other professionals / agencies.

On the in-patient neuro-rehabilitation unit and Birmingham neuro- rehabilitation team to act as a key working a set number of patients to plan and co-ordinate their outpatient programme and act as point of contact for clients, carers and outside agencies.

Communicate effectively with clients, family / carer, and other professionals both internal and external to organisation. This may require explanation, instruction, persuasion, motivation, negotiation, reassurance and require expert verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

Person specification

Qualifications

• Graduate Dip OT / Degree in Occupational Therapy.
• HCPC Registered
• Evidence of Continuous Professional Development.
• Relevant nationally recognised post-graduate training
• Member of relevant clinical interest group.

Experience

• Relevant experience as junior therapist/student to establish core OT skills & team working (acute, community & rehab
• Assessment & prescription of ADL equipment.
• Assessment & treatment of patients with complex disability, including neurological and deteriorating conditions
• Core / Basic IT skills; Word, Outlook, Excel.
• Familiarity of Postural management systems (wheelchairs and special seating systems ( or willing to learn) and the assessment & treatment of patients with amputations.
• Supervisory experience of students

Skills/ Knowledge

• Knowledge of the OT process & ability to use specific OT modalities.
• Ability to demonstrate high level of clinical reasoning/problem solving, development skills, for patients with neurological problems.
• Ability to manually handle patients and / or equipment safely, to attain positioning necessary to perform safe and effective clinical assessment / treatments.
• Ability to generate written communication, which is relevant, concise, accurate and legible.
• Evidence of good organisational skills, including prioritisation of workload and time management skills
• Ability to demonstrate high level of clinical reasoning/problem solving, development skills for patients with amputations , postural and wheelchair needs.
• Ability to demonstrate splinting skills with thermoplastics and casting skills (or prepared to develop these skills).

Personal Qualities

• Demonstrate flexibility within the changing NHS environment.
• Demonstrate initiative and motivation when working in a variety of situations.
• Willing to develop new skills as the services develop.

Other job requirements

• Ability to travel and access various work locations (eg. home visits). Must be car driver and have access to a vehicle for the community based services.

In accordance with UK Home Office requirements, Band 2 clinical and non-clinical roles and Band 3 Non-Clinical roles are not eligible for sponsorship.
