The main responsibilities of the Band 6 Junior Sister will be to assist the Band 7 in the management, maintenance, and support of the outpatient clinics across the Royal London and Mile End Hospitals.
The post holder will be responsible for supporting the Band 7’s in the management of clinic areas. This includes coordinating daily clinical activities, managing staff allocation and skill mix, responding to patient and staff concerns.
Identifying any potential risks within OPD and reporting and potentially rectifying these risks.
Participating in various managerial duties including completion of departmental rota, conducting staff appraisals, participating in the informal sickness management processes, clinical audits, and supporting Band 7 in managing staff performance and capability.
The Junior Sister will provide advice and support to the team involved in caring for patients in the Outpatient setting. They will be expected to set and maintain high standards of care in line with Trust vision & values and be accountable for auditing and monitoring those standards.
The successful candidate will also be expected to support the professional development of staff.

The post holder must be flexible to open and close Clinics as required by the service. The post holder must also demonstrate a flexible approach to the ever-changing workloads and provide cover for any areas.

Main duties of the job

The main responsibilities of the Band 6 Junior Sister will be to assist the Band 7 in the management, maintenance, and support of the outpatient clinics across The Royal London and Mile End Hospitals. The Outpatient areas are currently open Monday to Friday with varying hours from 08.30 to 19.00. There is a possibility that in the future there will be regular weekend and evening work. The post holder must be flexible to open and close Clinics as required by the service. The post holder must also demonstrate a flexible approach to the clinical area and provide cover for any area specified.

The post holder will be responsible for supporting the Band 7’s in the management of designated clinic area for supporting the professional development of staff. This includes coordinating daily clinical activities, managing staff numbers and skills mix, handling patients and staff complaints, managing risk to staff, colleagues, and visitors, implementation of service improvement strategies. It also includes participating in various managerial duties including completing staff rota, conducting staff appraisals, participating in the informal sickness management process, participation in clinical audits, and supporting Band 7 in managing staff performance and capability. The Junior Sister will provide advice and support to the team involved in caring for patients in the Outpatient setting. They will be expected to set and maintain high standards of care in line with Trust vision & values, and be accountable for auditing and monitoring those standards.

The Junior Sister will act as a professional role model and support junior staff in delivering high standards of care as well as supporting the Senior Sister in the supervision and management of staff development, performance, and capability. The Junior Sister will be responsible and accountable for the safe delivery of clinical services in the outpatients in the absence of the Senior Sister and deputizing in their absence as needed. The post holder will ensure that patients remain at the centre of care at all times.
