Band 6 or 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist (LARC Fitter)

The Clinical Nurse Specialist will provide a comprehensive, highly specialist service to patients with suspected or proven haematological malignancies. The aim of the post is to deliver expert care, advice, and support to patients with haematological malignancies, their carers, and patients undergoing investigations prior to diagnosis. Responsibilities include patient assessment, and planning and implementing specialist care.

The post holder will act as the key worker for haematology patients from investigation to initial diagnosis and throughout the cancer journey to ensure coordination and continuity of care. They will liaise with multidisciplinary team members, including Primary Health Care Team members, to provide specialist nursing expertise on haematology care.

Additional responsibilities include supporting haemophilia patients and their carers, liaising with the lead consultant to develop services, and providing a coordinated specialist service for patients with haematological malignancies and their carers. The role involves direct clinical involvement in complex care in outpatient and inpatient settings, breaking bad news, and coordinating discussions at multidisciplinary team meetings to facilitate management plans.

The post holder will liaise with GPs within 24 hours of cancer diagnosis, act as a resource for healthcare professionals, assess patients and their families' needs, and plan, implement, and evaluate care programs. They will communicate sensitive information regarding diagnosis, treatment, terminal illness, and bereavement, providing emotional, psychological, and practical support throughout the cancer journey.

They will ensure access to specialist information, act as the key worker or nominate one, and ensure clinical practice is effective, evidence-based, and outcome-focused. The role includes recognizing ethical dilemmas, advocating for patients, delivering cytotoxic agents via venous access devices, and managing change proactively to improve practice and patient outcomes.
