Anew and exciting position has arisen in the Integrated Therapies Department working within the Acute Medicine Team.

Clinically, you will be an integral part of the Acute Medicine Team, carrying a diverse caseload of patients with complex and multi-pathological diagnoses, using advanced clinical assessment skills to maximise independence, provide rehabilitation and ensure a safe and effective discharge. The team also covers a number of ring-fenced neurology inpatient beds.

We are an integrated team of occupational therapists, physiotherapists and therapy assistant practitioners that provide therapy input to a range of acute medical wards at JPUH.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 6 Occupational Therapist, you will be responsible for your own complex caseload consisting of patients with a variety of conditions. This will also include cover of neurology inpatient beds with a range of patients and conditions.You will use advanced assessment skills and formulate, implement and evaluate individualised treatment and rehabilitation plans, based on expert analytical and clinical reasoning skills. You will need advanced communication skills to ensure a successful multidisciplinary approach to patient care and will be in regular discussions with patients, carers, JPUH colleagues, community partners etc. on care plans. You will also be an integral part of our team's drive to prevent deconditioning and maintain function and mobility of our patients via various initiatives.

You will have the opportunity to lead on team meetings, in-service training, development ideas, service improvement, education of MDT members, supervision of students, therapy assistant practitioners and junior members of the team with support from seniors.

You will be supported to engage in critical enquiry related to improving patient care, evidence based practice and pathway improvements with opportunities to present outcomes in various settings internally and external to the Trust.

We support development of our future workforce through our close links with the University of East Anglia, Suffolk College and City College Norwich, providing teaching and placements to apprentices, undergraduates and postgraduates.

Job responsibilities

• To be responsible for delivering Occupational Therapy in the specialist assessment and treatment of patients within Acute Medicine teams
• To undertake an advanced assessment of patients presenting with complex multiple pathology/social issues who have been identified as fit for discharge. To determine their suitability for discharge, consider alternative options/treatment requirements and to maintain records as an autonomous practitioner
• To assist with teaching and supervision of new team members and students. Also deliver training to multidisciplinary team and others
• To assist evaluation of the Occupational Therapy Service provided within the specialism and other wards
• To be actively involved with service development within the speciality and to implement changes in service delivery as required
• To be responsible for proactively organising workload alongside other team members, Team Leader and Integrated Therapies Clinical Lead
• To work a rostered seven-day service

Hours will be up to 37.5 hours per week and predominantly within core hours but flexible working options are available. We would also consider a development role for the right candidate.

Education and Qualifications

• Diploma/Degree/MSc in Occupational Therapy
• Current HCPC registration
• CPD record should include evidence of up-to-date manual handling, relevant clinical courses and reflections of learning

Experience and Knowledge

• Experience at Band 5 level within a range of areas: patients with multi-pathology, including stroke and neurological conditions, dementia, falls, palliative care and bariatric patients
• Significant clinical experience within the NHS to include acute hospital setting and discharge planning
• Experience of working with a range of professionals within multidisciplinary teams
• Evidence of acting in a supervisory manner, providing specialist guidance, training and support to other staff or students
• Evidence of reflective learning
• Awareness of relevant professional practice, new research and guidelines
• Understanding of legal issues, safeguarding and mental capacity
• Working knowledge of clinical governance and implications for own work
