• Position: Biomedical Scientist – Microbiology

• Rate: £26.00 – £28.00 P/H

Job Description:

The Biomedical Science team at Pulse is currently recruiting a Band 6 Biomedical Scientist in Microbiology to work in a busy hospital in Watford. We are looking for a Biomedical Scientist who can make a real difference in supporting the laboratory’s Microbiology service. You should share our passion and drive to ensure that our patients receive quality and compassionate care and work with us to ensure the Trust continues its journey towards “great people, great place.”

What will you be doing in this Biomedical Scientist role?

Perform microbiological tests on a variety of clinical samples, including blood, urine, tissue, and other body fluids, to identify pathogens and determine their susceptibility to antibiotics. Ensure all laboratory procedures comply with quality standards and regulatory requirements. Participate in internal and external quality assurance programs. Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring it is calibrated and functioning correctly. Troubleshoot and report any malfunctions. Analyze and interpret test results, providing accurate and timely reports to clinicians. Assist in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. Maintain accurate and detailed records of all tests performed, including patient information, test results, and quality control data. Adhere to health and safety protocols to minimize risks to yourself and others. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow biosafety guidelines. Provide training and supervision to junior staff, students, and laboratory assistants. Ensure they follow standard operating procedures and maintain high standards of practice. Participate in research projects and contribute to the development of new diagnostic techniques and procedures. Stay updated with advancements in microbiology. Communicate effectively with healthcare professionals, providing expert advice on microbiological matters. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case discussions. Manage laboratory supplies and reagents, ensuring adequate stock levels and proper storage.

Essential Requirements for this Biomedical Scientist position:

  • HCPC registration.
  • Qualification in Biomedical Science (e.g., BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent).
  • Experience in Microbiology within the NHS or private sector in the UK.
  • Experience in bacteriology and the ability to work core hours.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex results.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
