Job overview

Join Our Blood Transfusion Team at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust!

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Biomedical Scientist with expertise in Blood Transfusion and Haematology to join our dynamic Pathology team.

If you have successfully completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio, you will be appointed on the appropriate AfC Band 6 salary. Applications are also welcome from candidates with an IBMS-accredited degree who intend to complete their HCPC registration portfolio.

The successful candidate will regularly rotate through all areas of the Blood Transfusion Department across Queen's Hospital, Romford and King George Hospital, Ilford, working as part of a 24/7 shift rota, including weekends.

Essential Requirement: Ability to work out of hours and on weekends as part of the rota.

Our Blood Transfusion Laboratory is an integral part of the Pathology Department, committed to delivering a patient-focused, high-quality service that embodies our Trust values of PRIDE: Passion, Responsibility, Innovation, Drive, and Empowerment.

We are dedicated to promoting staff health and well-being, providing comprehensive training and development opportunities, and equipping our team members with the tools they need to build an exciting and rewarding career.

Apply now to become part of a supportive, innovative, and forward-thinking team!

Main duties of the job

1) Keep the workplace and workbenches clean and tidy.

2) Maintain good working relationships with all staff members, and plan and organise own work within the demands of the team.

3) Treat everyone associated with BHRUT with courtesy and respect.

4) Rotate through different sections of the department and sites as required.

5) Undertake manual, semi-automated, and fully automated laboratory investigations in accordance with standard operating procedures.

6) Perform preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment; investigate and resolve equipment failures or seek advice from senior staff or service engineers. Maintain accurate maintenance records according to protocol.

7) Check the accuracy and precision of manual and automated laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures, and take corrective action if issues are identified.

8) Ensure preventative maintenance schedules are completed on laboratory instruments before use in patient investigations.

Working for our organisation

We're an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we're proud of and our patients are happy with. We're no longer in special measures; we've opened two new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH); and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, was named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal in 2024.

We operate from two main sites - KGH in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We're campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen's and get rid of corridor care.

Our patients are benefitting from our Women's Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George's Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch.

These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 94,000 scans a year.

The majority of our 8,000 staff - who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We're proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We're looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record that will be transformative for our staff and beneficial for our patients.
