An exciting opportunity has arisen in HMP Birmingham Healthcare for a Band 5 Staff Nurse to join the Birmingham Recovery Team, formerly the IDTS (Integrated Drug & Treatment Service).
BRT aims to increase the volume and quality of treatment available to prisoners requiring help for drugs and alcohol misuse, with a particular emphasis on early custody.
Our clinical team includes non-medical prescribers, staff nurses, and healthcare assistants, operating as a wing-based service. As part of an integrated 24-hour healthcare service, we collaborate with the Psychosocial team (Cranstoun), Primary Care, Mental Health teams, and HMPPS colleagues.
You will also be entitled to an environmental allowance of £1,542 per annum while working within HMP Birmingham.
Your role will involve providing high-quality, evidence-based nursing care, advice, and support for service users with substance misuse, mental, and physical health needs. This includes conducting health and substance misuse assessments, medication management, and care within a custodial setting.
You will complete nursing reviews and observations of patients experiencing withdrawals from drugs and alcohol, using relevant screening tools such as COWS and CIWA.
You will support the ACCT (Assessment, Care in Custody, and Teamwork) process and algorithms for assessing fitness to remain in the Care and Separation Unit.
Ensuring a high standard of nursing care, including the application of clinical procedures and treatment, custody, storage, and administration of prescribed medications.
Collaborating with internal and external partner agencies to ensure continuity of care for prisoners within HMP Birmingham.
