Transformation Unit is seeking a dedicated Neonatal nurse to join the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead. You will join a small, experienced team during an exciting period for maternity and neonatal services in Gateshead.

The role involves overseeing care plans, multi-disciplinary collaboration, and delivery of high-quality neonatal care in a busy unit. A strong nursing background with NMC registration is essential.

Qualifications

  • NMC registration is mandatory to practice in the UK.
  • QIS trained and NLS certification are preferred.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years neonatal experience recommended.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee assessment of neonatal care needs and plan, implement, and evaluate care.
  • Ensure care aligns with local and national policies; lead on evidence-based practice.
  • Participate in development, implementation and monitoring of policies.
  • Administer, store and order drugs for the Neonatal Unit safely.
  • Promote health education within the Neonatal Unit.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Maintain high standards of nursing care reflecting neonatal care philosophy.
  • Coordinate discharge planning with families and other agencies.

We are looking for a dedicated Neonatal nurse to join our team in caring for patients on the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.

You will be joining a small, experienced & passionate team at an exciting time for maternity & neonatal services at Gateshead.

Main duties of the job
  • Oversees and undertakes the assessment of neonatal patient care needs, and the planning, implementation and evaluation of care in the neonatal unit
  • Responsible for ensuring care in the neonatal area is consistent with local and national policies and protocols, and leads on the use of evidence based guidance to improve clinical practice.
  • Participates in the development, implementation and monitoring of local and national policies and protocols
  • Responsible for the safe administration, storage and ordering of drugs in the Neonatal Unit
  • Responsible for health promotion and health education within Neonatal Unit
  • Work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ensure high standards of nursing care are maintained reflecting all aspects of the neonatal unit philosophy of care.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised care for a designated group of babies and their parents.
  • Act as an advocate, upholding the best interests of the neonate and family.
  • Encourage practice which develops partnership with parents and maximises their contribution to the care of their babies.
  • Co-ordinate the care of neonates and families with other members of the health care team across the service.
  • To co-ordinates babies discharge ensuring involvement of other agencies as appropriate.
  • To maintain a pleasant unit atmosphere and a clean, safe unit environment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Act as a mentor working with students and staff qualified and unqualified in a way that is supportive and that facilitates reflective learning towards effective practice.

Act as a preceptor for new members of staff.

Support staff in developing competencies and undertake annual appraisals via ESR.

Maintain own professional development to ensure that all nursing practice is based on current knowledge and relevant research.

Uphold the NMC code of practice and be aware of the implications of the scope of practice.

Maintain own records/portfolio of continuing professional development in order to meet requirements.

Promote clinical supervision and reflective practice for self and members of the nursing team.

Maintain a current registration on the NMC register.
