Band 5 Biomedical Scientist-Clinical Chemistry

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England, serving the populations of Birmingham and Solihull. The Trust is composed of four main hospital sites; Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital (HGS). The post-holder will be required to rotate across all sites, although the main bases will be at Queen Elizabeth Hospital or Heartlands Hospital. We currently have vacancies primarily based at both QEH and Heartlands Hospital.

The department provides a 24/7 diagnostic and monitoring service for routine and urgent automated investigations. The Clinical Chemistry department is equipped with Abbott Alinity c and i series analysers and the Abbott a3600 track.

Specialist Chemistry provides a wide range of services to the Trust as well as other Hospital Trusts. Equipment includes IDS iSYS, Cascadion, Shimadzu HPLC and Sciex Tandem Mass Spectrometry analysers, with several tests measured including immunosuppressant's and steroids. There are manual methods using radio-immunoassay for alpha-subunits and ELISA for faecal Elastase.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our busy, friendly team and support our progressive department in providing high quality, timely and specialised services. We are UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 standards, MHRA approved and IBMS accredited for training.

This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience of working in a fast-paced department that is continually growing, and to expand and develop your existing knowledge and skills within high through put labs.

You must have a BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent with HCPC registration and with experience of working in Chemistry. Staff will have the opportunity to rotate into Automated and Specialist Chemistry labs at both QEH and BHH. Staff based at BHH will also get the opportunity to rotate into Immunology.

The laboratory operates a 24/7 service and, after appropriate training, you will be expected to support the departmental shift system as required - including weekends. Shifts include Early (7:30-3:30pm), Day (9:00-5:00pm), Late (2:00-10:00pm) and Nights (9:45pm-7:45am).
