Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Number of staff responsible for: 3 – 6 on each shift
- To carry out clinical practice within designated clinical areas, ensuring that high quality evidence-based nursing assessment, care planning, interventions and evaluations for children and young people is provided. To ensure delivery of high quality residential service for disabled children detailed: National Minimum Care Standards of Children’s Homes. This will include:
- Undertaking a comprehensive, children/person-centred, nursing assessment and prepare care plans in consultation with the children/young people, their parents/carers and supporting professionals, to provide the best nursing care
- Implementation of care plan and advocating for the children/young people.
- Evaluation of effectiveness of care plan provided in partnership with children and young people parents and carers and support professionals.
- Ability to implement research-based practice
- Following successful completion of preceptorship, ability to supervise junior and unregistered staff
- Ability to administer medicine within relevant Trust and legislative guidance e.g. NMC Standards for Medicines Management 2010 and the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
- Ability to undertake risk assessment and develop risk management strategies for individual children and young people who present with challenging behaviour.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of the key elements of relevant Legislation for Disabled Children in Residential Services.
- Ensure the ordering storage, administration and disposal of medication complies with relevant trust and legislative guidance e.g. NMC Standards for Medicines Management 2010,Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and MHA (1983)

Qualifications and experience
Essential criteria
- UK Registered Nurse LD/Children's/Adult's
- Significant experience of at least 2 years post qualifying
Desirable criteria
- • Experience of working with children with learning disabilities and complex healthcare needs.
Clinical Skills
Essential criteria
- • Knowledge of medication rounds and safe administration and disposal of drugs
- • Able to plan, implement and evaluate resident care and act accordingly if untoward changes occur
- • De-escalation and listening skills
- • Physical Intervention, and breakaway trained
- • Able to demonstrate experience of effective risk assessment and management
- • Knowledge of Safeguarding and Child Protection
- • Maintain accurate, appropriate records
- • Practical experience of providing high quality care and exceeding expectations
- • Able to develop an excellent therapeutic relationship; function as named nurse undertaking all aspects of the nursing process in order to provide best possible care
Professional/ Leadership skills
Essential criteria
- • Able to communicate effectively and efficiently with other members of the team
- • Leadership skills (motivating, using initiative, change management)
- • Understanding of the importance of Health and Safety
- • Effective report writing to provide clear relevant information for handovers, case conferences.
- • Have a working knowledge of Microsoft application or equivalent including use of emails, word processing, us of internet. Have a willingness to learn new applications as appropriate.
Desirable criteria
- • Able to undertake clinical supervision, appraisal, mentorship, teaching and preceptorships for Student nurses, bands 2, 3 and 4 staff. Ensure all personal development needs are reported to team leader.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- • Awareness of The Children’s Home (England) Regulations 2015
- • NMC's 'The Code': Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics for Nurses and Midwives
- • Experienced / knowledge of current developments in learning disability care and nursing practice with a focus on children and young people.
