Band 5/6 Biomedical Scientist

6 months of NHS experience mandatory

Grade/Band: 5/6

Location: St George's Hospital

Start Date: 2 December 2024

End Date: 28 February 2025

Days/Time Required: Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM

Pay Rates: £21 - £23 per hour

Pay Mechanism: Direct Mechanism

Job Description: We are looking for an experienced Biomedical Scientist with a focus on bacteriology to join our team at St George's Hospital. The role involves working with a range of laboratory equipment and performing critical tasks to support microbiology diagnostics.

About Client: St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest NHS trusts in the UK, located in Tooting, London. It operates St George's Hospital, a major teaching hospital offering a wide range of medical services, including emergency care, surgery, and specialist services. The trust is affiliated with St George's, University Hospitals Medical School and is a key provider of health services to South London. It is also involved in advanced medical research and education.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Perform bacteriology-related laboratory work, including using analysers and equipment
  2. Read and interpret culture plates for identification of bacterial pathogens
  3. Set up and execute susceptibility tests to guide treatment decisions
  4. Maintain accurate records of tests, results, and procedures
  5. Ensure adherence to safety and quality control standards
  6. Collaborate with other laboratory staff and clinical teams to ensure effective workflow

Requirements:

  1. Proven experience in bacteriology and microbiology techniques
  2. Knowledge of laboratory analysers and equipment
  3. Familiarity with reading and interpreting culture plates
  4. Experience in setting up and performing susceptibility tests
  5. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  6. Ability to work independently and as part of a team
