Job description

Band 4, Physiotherapy Technician, Callington Road Hospital, Bristol

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our thriving Bristol Physiotherapy and Exercise team as a Band 4 Physiotherapy Technician, at Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership Mental Health Trust.

The post holder will be an integral member of the Physiotherapy and Exercise Team in Bristol, working closely with Physiotherapists and alongside a team of Exercise Specialists to provide physiotherapy and exercise services to both adult and older adult inpatients.

Patients accessing this service experience a range of mental health challenges. The successful candidate will need skills and knowledge to understand how these conditions impact motivation and participation in physiotherapy sessions.

Main duties of the job
  1. Work as part of the multi-professional team to deliver physiotherapy-led interventions to clients in inpatient units and in the community.
  2. Support the Senior Physiotherapist in delivering and progressing therapeutic interventions, exercise programmes, and equipment provision.
  3. Plan, organise, and deliver delegated physiotherapy interventions in line with trust standards.
  4. Work with groups and individuals, optimising the use of the hospital gym in collaboration with the Senior Physiotherapist.

The post holder may be asked to perform duties beyond those listed, which may vary over time. Significant and permanent changes in duties may warrant post re-evaluation.

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

  • Follow up with clients regularly, independently, according to a Care Plan.
  • Assess and implement physical activity and health promotion programmes meeting Trust policies.
  • Design, monitor, and adapt physical activity and exercise programmes for individuals and groups, observing progress and making adjustments.
  • Provide practical advice and information to service users, carers, and staff within your competency.
  • Participate in health promotion campaigns and create resources.
  • Demonstrate safe handling of gym and other equipment.
  • Identify safeguarding issues and report concerns according to Trust procedures.
  • Conduct risk assessments related to clinical practice and personal safety, reporting concerns as needed.
  • Support development and implementation of intervention plans, policies, and procedures within your scope.
  • Perform pre-exercise health screenings and assessments, referring to senior staff when necessary.
  • Adhere to health and safety regulations, ensuring safety for patients and staff.
  • Assist in personal care and carry out rehab programmes under supervision.
Person Specification
Essential/Desirable
  • Diploma/degree in a relevant subject or equivalent experience.
  • GCSE grade C or above in English and Maths.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development (CPD).
  • Certificate of Fundamental Care or ability to complete within 6 months.
  • Experience in a health or social care environment.
  • Experience working in a multi-professional team and understanding of boundaries.
  • Understanding of mental health issues and safeguarding.
  • Good organisational skills, initiative, and ability to work independently.
  • Competent IT skills (Word, Excel, email, electronic notes).
  • Ability to travel independently as per Trust policies.
  • NVQ level 3 in health and social care or equivalent.
  • Level 3 in Personal Training and exercise referral.
  • Previous experience as a therapy assistant and in mental health settings.
