University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) is recruiting a Band 3 Rehabilitation Assistant to join our multidisciplinary team. The role provides clinical and administrative support across Neurorehabilitation, Upper Limb Rehabiliation, Stroke Services, Neurology and Neurosurgery.

The post involves work with therapists and nursing staff, contributing to patient rehabilitation plans in a busy NHS environment at a highly regarded teaching hospital in London.

Qualifications

• Two GCSEs including English or equivalent.
• NVQ3 or equivalent required.
• Healthcare experience would be beneficial.
• Good formal and informal communication skills.
• Able to work as part of a team and without direct supervision.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living under supervision.
• Deliver rehabilitation activities with therapists.
• Use rehabilitation equipment as instructed by therapists.
• Assist in preparing treatment areas and transport equipment.
• Accurately update patient records and assist with data entry.

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) are searching for a passionate Band 3 Rehabilitation Assistant to join their highly skilled team.

UCLH is one of the most complex NHS trusts in the UK, serving a large and diverse population.

We provide academically led acute and specialist services, to people from the local area, from throughout the United Kingdom and overseas.

Job Purpose:

To provide both clinical and administrative support to the Allied Health Professional staff within areas of the service. These posts are rotational within the following care teams:

• Neurorehabilitation Unit
• Upper Limb Rehabiliation
• Stroke Services
• Neurology
• Neurosurgery

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• To work under the supervision of AHP and nursing staff in the performance of specific tasks for an individual or group of patients, as part of their goal directed treatment and rehabilitation programmes. Such tasks may include:
  • Assisting the patients with functional activities of daily living (e.g. personal care)
  • Working directly with the therapist to deliver rehabilitation
  • Use of rehabilitation equipment as instructed by therapist
  • Working alone on a ward delivering treatment as specified by therapy staff
  • Assist qualified staff in the provision of adaptive equipment
  • Assist patients with communication and swallowing difficulties to use strategies advised by the Speech and Language Therapist.
  • To assist patients with structuring and sequencing tasks using cognitive strategies as directed by the psychologist.
  • To provide simple nutritional advice to patients and their carers within their scope of practice under supervision of the dietitian.
  • To work with nursing staff to ensure patients are dressed and ready for their therapy sessions.

Requirements:

• 2 GCSEs including English/ equivocal English qualification.
• NVQ3 or equivalent.
• Healthcare working.

• To prepare patients for treatment and assist the clinician when required.
• To prepare and maintain a safe and clean treatment area, tidying up after use, to reduce the risk of infection.
• To visit patients’ homes on Home Assessments and measure for and fit aids under the direction of the Occupational Therapist.
• To assist qualified staff in the treatment of heavily dependent patients, this includes the use of hoists, patient handling equipment, standing frame or tilt table etc.
• To update patient clinical records in a concise, accurate and timely manner in line with UCLH and professional standards and input appropriate statistics onto spreadsheet/database.
• To participate in the collation of information relevant to audit and data analysis.
• To be aware at all times of the needs of the patient during illness or disability, to promote and encourage independence and restoration of function and to reinforce advice and patient education.
• To comply with the Trust Manual handling Policy and Local Therapeutic Guidelines when moving heavy equipment and patients.
• To deal with day to day hazards of infection and contact with body fluids, smells and noise.
• To comply with food handling standards and wheelchair safety precautions as directed by line manager.
• To encourage patients and carer participation in individual and group treatment sessions to help promote maintenance and improvement in independence.
• To communicate with empathy and tact when dealing with patients with cognitive impairments, complex physical disability and challenging behaviour, thus achieving a therapeutic relationship.
• To be involved in ward based training of staff regarding nutritional screening, supplements and snacks.
• To be responsible for observing, assessing and communicating changes in patient’s condition to a multidisciplinary team.
