Job summary

A leading healthcare provider in Birmingham is seeking Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician apprentices for a vocational training programme starting in Autumn 2025 or Spring 2026. This full-time, 2-year fixed term role involves working under pharmacy professionals and attending college once a week. Apprentices will gain invaluable experience in pharmacy operations and can achieve registration with the GPhC upon completion of the training.

Band 2 Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician (Apprenticeship)

The Pharmacy Department at UHB are currently recruiting Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician apprentices to begin a vocational training programme commencing Autumn 2025 or Spring 2026. Multiple posts are available at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital.

This is a fantastic opportunity for the post holder to not only work as part of a pharmacy team, but also learn the key functions of a pharmacy technician role under the guidance and support of pharmacy professionals. You will attend Walsall College one day a week to complete the Open Awards Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians (RQF).

The posts are full time, 2 year, fixed term contracts. Upon successful completion you will be able to register with the GPhC. The salary for this training post is 24,465 (AfC Band 2), unless NHS pay preservation provision applies (AfC Annex 30). You will also receive 27 days annual leave per year plus Bank Holidays

Main duties of the job

Pharmacy Technicians are vital members of the pharmacy team and contribute greatly to today's NHS healthcare team. The role of a Pharmacy Technician is becoming more varied and complex as medicines become increasingly sophisticated. Career opportunities for a Pharmacy Technician post qualification include, medicines management roles, manufacturing, quality control, staff training, information technology, supplies procurement, clinical trials or medicines information services and managing staff and sections within the Pharmacy Department.

Pharmacy Technicians are involved in the preparation, dispensing and supply of medicines to wards, departments and directly to patients. They support Pharmacists in providing safe and effective drug treatment for all our patients.

Pharmacy Technicians need to be able to work in a systematic and accurate manner and to have good numeracy skills. They also need to be able to communicate well with people. Previous experience in a pharmacy or other health care setting would be desirable but is not essential. Strong organisational and time management skills are essential to ensure the successful achievement of the Diploma whilst working under the supervision of a Pharmacist.
