Job summary

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is seeking Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician apprentices to start February/March 2027 across multiple sites in Birmingham. You will train at Walsall College one day per week toward the Open Awards Level 3 Diploma in Pharmacy Techniques.

The two-year fixed-term post offers AfC Band 2 pay (£25,272) and 27 days’ annual leave plus Bank Holidays, with possible pay protection provisions.

Qualifications

  • Pharmacy Services Level 2 can be accepted as alternative to GCSE Science.

Job description

Job Summary

The Pharmacy Department at UHB are currently recruiting Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician apprentices to begin a vocational training programme commencing February/March 2027. Multiple posts are available at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital.

This is a fantastic opportunity for the post holder to not only work as part of a pharmacy team, but also learn the key functions of a pharmacy technician role under the guidance and support of pharmacy professionals. You will attend Walsall College one day a week to complete the Open Awards Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians (RQF).

The posts are full time, 2 year, fixed term contracts. Upon successful completion you will be able to register with the GPhC. The salary for this training post is £25,272 (AfC Band 2), unless NHS pay preservation provision applies (AfC Annex 30). You will also receive 27 days annual leave per year plus Bank Holidays.

The Minimum Entry Requirements Are

4 GCSE's including Science, English Language & Maths grade C/4 or equivalent. Certificates must be seen prior to interview.

Pharmacy Services Level 2 will be accepted as an alternative to GCSE Science and experience working within a pharmacy environment is desirable but not essential.

Apprenticeship funding rules apply.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

Pharmacy Technicians are vital members of the pharmacy team and contribute greatly to today's NHS healthcare team. The role of a Pharmacy Technician is becoming more varied and complex as medicines become increasingly sophisticated. Career opportunities for a Pharmacy Technician post qualification include, medicines management roles, manufacturing, quality control, staff training, information technology, supplies procurement, clinical trials or medicines information services and managing staff and sections within the Pharmacy Department.

Pharmacy Technicians are involved in the preparation, dispensing and supply of medicines to wards, departments and directly to patients. They support Pharmacists in providing safe and effective drug treatment for all our patients.

Pharmacy Technicians need to be able to work in a systematic and accurate manner and to have good numeracy skills. They also need to be able to communicate well with people.

Previous experience in a pharmacy or other health care setting would be desirable but is not essential.

Strong organisational and time management skills are essential to ensure the successful achievement of the Diploma whilst working under the supervision of a Pharmacist.
