Job summary

Candour is seeking an experienced Backend Systems Developer to design, develop and maintain backend integrations across core business systems in a Manchester-based role. You will build scalable middleware, REST APIs and event-driven integrations that support high-volume data movement and real-time processing.

The role requires strong SQL, cloud experience (AWS), Docker, Kubernetes, GraphQL and modern development practices (CI/CD, testing, Git).

Qualifications

• 4+ years’ commercial experience in backend software development using a strongly typed programming language.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain backend integrations between digital platforms and core business systems, including warehouse, ERP and finance solutions.
• Build scalable middleware to support order processing, inventory synchronisation and real-time data exchange.
• Create and maintain REST APIs and event-driven integrations across multiple systems.
• Implement queue-based processing to support high-volume asynchronous workloads.
• Improve system resilience through retry mechanisms, circuit breakers and fault-tolerant design.
• Work closely with engineers, product teams and operational stakeholders to deliver high-quality technical solutions.
• Contribute to engineering standards and best practice through code reviews, mentoring and knowledge sharing.
• Develop modern, cloud-ready services using clean, maintainable and scalable architecture.
• Monitor system performance and identify opportunities to improve reliability, scalability and efficiency.

• Strong SQL skills, including database design and performance optimisation.
• Good understanding of software architecture principles, including SOLID, Clean Architecture and Domain-Driven Design.

• Hands-on experience with Docker and containerised applications.
• Experience working with message queues and event-driven architectures.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience working with AWS or another cloud platform.
• Knowledge of Kubernetes or container orchestration.
• Exposure to GraphQL.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools.
• Understanding of secure software development and data protection best practices.
• Previous experience working within high-transaction, high-availability or fast-paced environments.
