Senior Specialist Occupational Therapist - Renal and Urology

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a B7 Senior Specialist Occupational Therapist to work as part of an established and dynamic Renal and Urology multi-disciplinary therapy team.

Guy's and St Thomas' renal and transplant service is a centre of excellence for the treatment of kidney disease. Clinical services are centred at Guy's with outreach services offered on a number of sites in south east London and Kent. This role covers the inpatient wards at Guy's hospital.

We are seeking an individual who is enthusiastic, dynamic and forward thinking with excellent proven clinical and people management skills. Supported by the clinical specialist you will have responsibility for overseeing the inpatient Renal & Urology Occupational Therapy team. This will include the assessment and acute rehabilitation of your own complex caseload, as well as providing supervision and leadership to the junior team. This post will allow you to develop and utilise your specialist clinical skills in the management of people with complex health, rehabilitation and supportive care needs. Prior experience in the NHS would be desirable.

Main duties of the job

To provide a high quality expert Occupational Therapy Service to a specialist caseload of Renal & Urology based at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital Trust. This service consists of renal wards, high dependency unit, dialysis units, and outpatient renal, low clearance and nephrology clinics.

  • To manage a complex caseload within renal & Urology wards, using advanced clinical reasoning, critical thinking, reflection and analysis to support assessments using a client.
  • To be responsible for a designated team of Occupational Therapists providing leadership for junior staff, Technical Instructors and Occupational Therapy Assistants through supervision and performance management.
  • To assist junior staff in the management of complex cases requiring advanced Clinical Reasoning.
  • To lead and advise on clinical Occupational Therapy developments within the renal medicine service at a specialist hospital and nation-wide level, and other related Trust wide projects.
  • To be responsible for the maintenance and development of own CPD identifying and contributing to the evidence base of Occupational Therapy.
  • To educate Occupational Therapy Students on practice placements.
  • To provide a patient centred approach and current evidence base to assess, treat, implement, evaluate and document Occupational Therapy interventions.
  • To support the management of the OT Service as required by the Heads of Service.

Person Specification
Training and Qualification
  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Masters level or equivalent training in specialist area or evidence of significant practical experience, research or publication in specialist area.
Experience
  • Evidence of clinical knowledge of the interplay of disease process and functional wellbeing.
  • Experience should include a varied range of clinical experiences in an acute hospital setting.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and post registration education and training.
  • Experience of audit.
  • Ability to supervise junior staff and students.
  • Experience in areas such as: Renal medicine Stroke rehabilitation Elderly care Hand therapy Palliative care General medicine
Skills & Abilities
  • Specialist knowledge, understanding and application of Occupational Therapy process relating to client centred practice.
  • Specialist knowledge, application and analysis of standardised assessment tools.
  • Ability to prescribe adaptive equipment, assistive devices, wheelchairs and pressure cushions for patients with a variety of complex conditions.
  • Experience of working within multi-disciplinary diagnostic and intervention services.
  • Ability to manage individual and team performance.
  • Basic knowledge of upper and lower limb splinting and orthoses fabrication, hand therapy and management
