Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Abstract pertinent information from patient case notes and other relevant sources, detailing primary diagnoses, co-morbidities, operations, investigations, and treatments for each care period provided to patients. Utilize knowledge and experience to translate this data into ICD-10 and OPCS-4 codes, ensuring accuracy and adherence to coding conventions. Enter the coded information promptly and accurately into the hospital's Patient Administration System, following established guidelines for International Classification of Diseases and OPCS procedure books.

Essential criteria

  • At least 2 years experience of coding in a hospital setting and actively working towards achieving ACC certification.
  • Degree or equivalent qualification.

Desirable criteria

  • ECDL

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Substantial Clinical Coding expertise across multiple specialties and levels of complexity, to be proven either by an acceptable portfolio of evidence or sitting an internal examination
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology and other aspects of clinical coding practice (independent research, self-teaching etc)
  • Good experience of MS Office suite, including ability to use Excel spreadsheets.

  • Worked with Cerner/PowerChart and Medicode

  • Ability to analyse and abstract complex medical records.
  • Keen attention to detail with a diligent approach to work.
  • Ability to work independently as well as demonstrable teamwork.

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines and coding accuracy standards.
  • Ability to communicate with staff at all levels.
