The Azure Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining Microsoft Azure infrastructure and services that support enterprise systems, applications, and business operations. This role focuses on modernization of legacy systems, infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) environments, ensuring performance, security, scalability, and governance across Azure workloads. The engineer will also contribute to automation initiatives, cost optimization, and incident response, while serving as a subject matter expert for escalated support and project-based work.
Responsibilities
- Provision, configure, and manage Azure virtual infrastructure with best practices for availability and performance.
- Assist in environment backup and disaster recovery, including Azure Site Recovery.
- Deploy, manage, and troubleshoot infrastructure components such as Azure Load Balancers, Virtual Networks (VNets), Firewalls, and Route Tables.
- Configure private endpoints and network segmentation across IaaS and PaaS workloads.
- Implement and support RBAC, management, and conditional access policies via Azure AD / Entra ID.
- Support IaaS and PaaS workloads including Virtual Machines, App Services, Azure SQL, and Logic Apps.
- Respond to and troubleshoot infrastructure-related incidents, performance issues, and outages.
- Monitoring and performance tuning using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Alerts.
- Investigate and resolve connectivity and routing issues across network components.
- Contribute to security and compliance in collaboration with the infrastructure and InfoSec teams.
- Provide after-hours emergency support.
Required Skills
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in computer technology or information systems or a similar field.
- Relevant Azure or cloud infrastructure certifications (e.g., AZ-104, AZ-305, AZ-500).
Experience
- A minimum of 4 years of hands-on experience managing Microsoft Azure infrastructure and Windows Server OS.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code via Terraform and PowerShell.
- Experience with core services including networking, backup, and monitoring in a production Azure environment.
Skills/Abilities
- Strong understanding of Azure networking concepts (VNets, NSGs, firewalls, private endpoints).
- Proficient with managing and automating infrastructure via Terraform.
- Familiar with Azure Update Management, Defender for Cloud, and other cloud tools.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an Agile/DevOps environment.
- Excellent troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.
Working Conditions
- Travel to the Bannockburn IL corporate office on a quarterly basis.

- Hours: 8am to 5pm; after-hours work as needed, including emergency on-call for outages and incidents.
