Job summary

Mercury Hampton Ltd in Cheshire seeks an Automation Engineer to deliver end-to-end automation projects. You will design, program and commission PLC/SCADA/HMI systems using SIEMENS toolsets and integrate with higher-level manufacturing software.

Requirements include a degree in Electrical/Automation Engineering and hands-on experience with Step 7, TIA Portal, WinCC and PCS 7. A competitive salary up to £60,000 plus car allowance is on offer.

Qualifications

• A degree in Electrical/Automation Engineering or related field.
• Experience in automation engineering using Siemens tools.
• Strong PLC programming and HMI development skills.
• Knowledge of Profinet/Ethernet/IP/Profibus is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Analyse customer requirements and develop functional design specifications.
• Design and program PLC control systems and HMI/SCADA visualisation.
• Integrate PLC with higher‑level manufacturing and business systems.
• Conduct FAT and customer demonstrations.
• Support SAT, commissioning and start‑up activities.
• Produce technical documentation and training materials.
• Provide post‑project support and troubleshooting.
• Collaborate with project teams and customers for successful delivery.

Automation Engineer

Location: Cheshire

Salary: Up to £60,000 (DOE) + car allowance

This role offers the chance to work on diverse projects from concept through to commissioning, collaborating with customers and multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop cutting edge control systems and automation solutions.

The Role

As an Automation Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering automation projects throughout their full lifecycle, from requirements gathering and system design through to testing, commissioning, and ongoing support.

Key responsibilities include:

• Analysing customer requirements and developing Functional Design Specifications (FDS)
• Designing and programming PLC control systems and HMI/SCADA visualisation solutions
• Integrating PLC systems with higher-level manufacturing and business systems
• Conducting Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and customer demonstrations
• Supporting Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning, and start-up activities
• Producing technical documentation, operating procedures, and training materials
• Providing post-project support and troubleshooting assistance
• Working closely with project teams and customers to ensure successful project delivery

Your Experience:

• A Degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Control Systems, or a related discipline
• Previous experience in an automation engineering position (SIEMENS, Step 7, TIA Portal, WinCC, PCS 7)
• Strong PLC programming and HMI development skills
