Job Description:

SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT

Lead Automation Developer

Reference: 2023-7781

Overview

Would you like to work for a large, operational and delivery focused Directorate at the forefront of key Scottish Government priorities? Play a pivotal role in delivering and managing complex Robotic Process Automation (RPA) & automated solutions, supporting initiatives across Scottish Government and the wider public sector.

The newly formed Automation Team has a vacancy for a Lead Automation Developer to manage agile projects and support team development in AI-powered automation solutions.

Corporate Transformation is a new Directorate established to increase the Scottish Government’s capacity to deliver transformational change across the public sector. It will oversee key projects and programmes.

As Lead Automation Developer, you will collaborate with stakeholders, identify automation opportunities, design, develop, test, and maintain automations, and employ process optimisation and agile methodologies. You will oversee the development team, manage defects and change requests, and create monitoring mechanisms.

You will ensure quality assurance, contribute to service design, coach the team, and evaluate automation frameworks. You will define working standards, provide training, and promote best practices within the team, ensuring automations meet business requirements and are scalable.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop your technical and managerial skills and lead the Scottish Government’s Automation Centre of Excellence team.

DDaT Pay Supplement

This post attracts a £5,000 per annum pro-rata DDaT Pay Supplement after a 3-month qualifying period. Pay supplements are temporary payments addressing recruitment and retention issues, subject to review.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and encourage the team to identify automation opportunities, employing process optimisation techniques and agile methodologies, focusing on quality and risk management.
  • Apply strategic thinking to automation, seeking commonalities in processes and patterns, and using the latest tools and technology for decision-making.
  • Oversee design, build, testing, and deployment of automation solutions, collaborating with stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Identify and manage obstacles, improve system robustness, resilience, and stability.
  • Define control mechanisms for prioritisation, investigation, and resolution of issues and change requests in production.
  • Work with technical architects and senior management to formulate long-term strategies and ensure quality assurance.
  • Demonstrate stakeholder management and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Define and coach the team to maintain standards for automated solutions within the Scottish Public Sector.
