Disney Theatrical Group in London is seeking an Automation Assistant to join the Automation department for The Greatest Showman on a fixed-term basis. The role focuses on supporting safe operation, maintenance, and smooth running of automated stage machinery during rehearsals and performances.

You will work with the Head and Deputy Head of Automation, coordinate with multiple production teams, and help ensure high quality show execution while adhering to health and safety rules.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a similar large-scale musical production is desirable.
  • Knowledge of automation systems including electronics, motors, winches, and rigging devices.
  • Experience operating computerized automation control equipment.
  • Comfortable with working at height.
  • Strong collaboration across departments.
  • Commitment to health and safety standards (LOLER, PUWER, Working at Height).

Responsibilities

  • Support Head and Deputy Head of Automation with show running and rehearsals.
  • Liaise between Company Manager, Technical, Creative, Production and General Management.
  • Perform daily setup, automation rig checks, and communications.
  • Adjust for understudy and swing performances.
  • Operate show automation during performances.
  • Attend rehearsals and technical sessions as required.
  • Maintain automation equipment to meet artistic requirements.
  • Report issues promptly and provide feedback.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety policy.

Automation Assistant - The Greatest Showman, London

We are seeking a passionate and motivated individual to join the Automation department for a musical on a fixed-term basis.
As an Automation Assistant, you’ll report to the Head and Deputy Head of Automation. Your focus will be on supporting the safe operation, maintenance, and smooth running of automated stage machinery and systems during rehearsals and performances.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Assist the Head and Deputy Head of Automation, liaising between the Company Manager, Technical departments, Creative Team, Production, and General Management Teams to ensure the smooth running of all rehearsals and performances.
  • Assist the Head and Deputy Head of Automation with any day-to‑time changes that might impact the running of the Production.
  • Perform daily setup, automation rig checks, and maintain clear communication within the Automation team.
  • Ensure awareness of understudy and swing performances ahead of each show and make necessary adjustments.
  • Operate the show automation for performances, replicating the show’s design.
  • Attend rehearsal, technical, dress, and understudy rehearsals as required.
  • Support the Head and Deputy Head of Automation in maintaining all automation equipment to ensure it is in working order for each performance. Maintain the quality of the show as directed by the artistic requirements and under the guidance of the Head of Automation, Production Manager, and Creative Team.
  • Report and provide timely feedback on show and staff-related issues.
  • Work in full compliance with Disney's Health and Safety Policy and maintain knowledge of relevant legislation and best practices.
Skills Required
  • Experience in a similar role within a large-scale musical production, working alongside an international cast, is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of setting up, maintaining, and operating automation systems including electronics, electric motors, winches, and both manual and automated rigging devices.
  • Experience in operating computerized automation control equipment is highly desirable.
  • Comfortable with working at height as part of daily responsibilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster positive working relationships across departments.
  • Excellent initiative and practical problem-solving skills, particularly in high‑pressure backstage situations.
  • Able to handle issues that arise during performances with focus, professionalism, and composure.
  • Clear and confident communicator, with the ability to make informed decisions and collaborate effectively with cast, creative, and production teams.
  • Solid understanding of health and safety legislation relevant to the role, including LOLER, PUWER, and Working at Height regulations.
  • Proven ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently.
  • Highly effective team player with strong collaboration skills.
  • Capable of following instructions and adhering to department protocols.
  • Motivated to learn new skills and committed to upholding the quality of a major production.
  • Demonstrates discretion and professionalism when working closely with others.
  • Well‑organised and detail‑oriented in all aspects of work.
Additional Information
  • Fixed-term Contract, 48 hours per week.
  • Monday‑Saturday schedule with a midweek and weekend matinee.
  • This role will require the candidate to understand and follow the Health and Safety Rules & Regulations at the production.
