Job Description

Under general supervision, trains and educates providers, hospital, and coding staff on inpatient facility coding and documentation. Prepares training materials, researches questions, provides guidance on provider queries, and interacts with hospital staff for documentation improvement. Performs audits to ensure accuracy and compliance, reviews assignment of MCCs and CCs, and participates in external audit reviews. Utilizes coding references and software.

Essential Functions
  1. Performs documentation and coding audits, provides feedback for quality improvement, and educates on inpatient coding (50%).
  2. Coordinates annual review of coding guidelines and responds to validation requests (10%).
  3. Creates and revises standardized coding queries and training (10%).
  4. Reviews queries, provides feedback, and identifies areas for provider education (10%).
  5. Maintains knowledge of DRG, ROM, SOI, POA, and coding credentials (5%).
  6. Updates skills in coding software, researches regulatory changes (10%).
  7. Participates in departmental meetings and reads relevant publications (5%).
Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor's preferred.

Work Experience: 4-6 years of facility medical coding, DRG fundamentals, medical record review, and auditing experience.

Licenses: CCS or AHIMA membership required.
