Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and highly specialist Audiologist or Clinical Scientist to join UCLH as Audiology Professional Manager (Adult Auditory Implants). You will lead the Adult Auditory Implant Audiology Service, providing advanced clinical expertise in assessment, programming, and rehabilitation of adult cochlear implant users. Alongside managing a complex caseload, you will provide professional leadership to the team, ensuring high-quality, patient-centred care in line with national and international standards. The role includes staff management, service planning, clinical governance, and driving innovation through research, audit, and education.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert advice regarding complex and highly complex clinical issues to other members of the team and to other professions.
- Manage leave requests and staff sickness absence in line with Trust policies.
- Support the Audiology Service Manager to ensure accurate activity and financial planning of services.
- With the support of the relevant Audiology service lead, be responsible for ensuring service capacity is delivered to meet clinical demands and performance targets.
- Initiate and lead service developments and liaise with the relevant Audiology service lead to understand the impact on the named service area.
- Ensure safeguarding processes for children and vulnerable adults are managed throughout the service, including access to training and local policies where appropriate.
- Oversee compliance with relevant standards that could include national or locally agreed performance or quality standard targets (e.g., NHSP; Audiology led clinics; AQP referrals; direct access audiology; IQIPS standards; NDCS and BCIG Quality Standards).
Responsibilities: Clinical Practice
- Lead the Adult Auditory Implant Audiology Service, providing advanced clinical expertise in assessment, programming, and rehabilitation of adult cochlear implant users.
- Provide professional leadership to the team and ensure patient-centred care in line with national and international standards.
- Collaborate with consultants in ENT/AVM/Neuro-otology, other audiologists, and healthcare professionals to ensure holistic patient care.
- Ensure access to counselling, rehabilitation, and external support for hearing loss; support and motivate patients to complete assessment and rehabilitation.
- Communicate effectively with patients to manage appointments within appropriate time frames to reduce delays; undertake joint consultations with psychologists, speech and language therapists, and teachers of the deaf; work with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and be vigilant to vulnerabilities such as refugee status or war-related trauma.
Qualifications and Skills
- Significant cochlear implant experience; strong communication and organisational skills; commitment to equality, safeguarding, and sustainability.
- Ability to communicate complex information sensitively and effectively to patients and relatives; capability to communicate with profoundly deaf people including users of sign language and interpreters; adaptability in communication based on clinical diagnosis and treatment stage.
