Main duties of the job

Additional responsibilities areto manage the service audit, clinical governance and continuing professionaldevelopment and for training within the service for staff and incomingstudents.

Job responsibilities

MAIN DUTIES ANDRESPONSIBILITIES

Assessment of the hearing ability of individualswithin a wide range of patient groups using various audiological techniques,which will include the use of specialised equipment and methods and beclinically accountable for clinic reports and treatment plans.

Assessment of patients with balance disordersusing highly specialised equipment and be clinically accountable for clinicreports and treatment plans.

Reporting of findings to a wide range ofcolleagues, both within the NHS and to external statutory and non-statutorybodies. Reports are expected to contain recommended courses of action whereappropriate.

Participate in and advise (within the scope ofthe postholders knowledge) on service development, treatment/interventiontypes and equipment procurement for the department.

Use of SystmOne and all other internal recordingand reporting systems

Provide in-depth knowledge and understanding ofthe effects of hearing loss for patients, their families and carers and otherorganisations.

Providing patient centred care and support forindividuals, relatives and carers who may have special needs and other physicaldisabilities, and who may have barriers to communication.

Maintaining a professional, compassionate andpolite manner at all times.

The post holder is responsible for accuratekeeping of patient records and information, inputting clinical data and reportsinto the Audiology departments computer database.

Some knowledge of computer databases andinformation technology networked systems is required for this post; trainingwill be given for software specific to the area of work.

To communicate in an effective and timely mannerusing both the written and spoken word in a wide range of situations wherebarriers to effective communication may exist.

To work in collaboratively within ourmulti-disciplinary team to deliver a co-ordinated, multidisciplinary serviceand to assist others to deliver their services.

To participate in the activities ofrepresentative professional bodies, to the advantage of the department, thehospital and the Trust and to the benefit of Audiology Service users.

To ensure that their statutory mandatorytraining is up date in line with the requirements of the post.

To use techniques of practice review andreflection, in conjunction with supervision and appraisal to develop own andcolleagues work performance.

To accept clinical responsibility for adesignated caseload of patients and organise this caseload effectively andefficiently having regard for clinical priorities and departmental resources.

To negotiate resource allocations at outreachclinics with local managers to effectively manage clinical caseloads.

The post holder will be expected to be able tocarry out front-line diagnostic and troubleshooting evaluation of audiologicalequipment, repair when appropriate and referral to others with greaterspecialist knowledge when appropriate. A high degree of judgement is implied inthis requirement.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• The post holder will provide Clinical Audiology services consistent with an experienced member of staff who holds a BSc (Hons) in Audiology, or BAAT parts 1 and 2.
• The post holder is required to have substantial clinical experience subsequent to entry-level qualification, with at least two years post-qualification experience within a busy hospital setting including supporting ENT services.
• It is desirable that applicants should be AHCS registered, and be registered with the BAA or BSA.
