Overview

George Watson’s College is seeking a motivated and skilled Audio Visual & IT Support Technician to join our Audio Visual & Digital Services team. This is an exciting opportunity to support pupils and staff across the school, ensuring first-class AV and IT services that enhance learning, performance, and community engagement.

Reporting to the Audio Visual & Digital Services Manager and working closely with the Audio Visual & Digital Services Engineer, you will provide hands-on technical support across a wide range of School activities. Your work will be varied, dynamic, and impactful – from ensuring seamless sound, lighting, and video production for major school and external events, to supporting classroom technology and installation of AV hardware.

We are looking for someone with a passion for technology, creativity, and problem-solving. You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to manage multiple projects and events. Strong teamwork and communication skills are essential, and there will be a requirement for out-of-hours working to support events which will be appropriately remunerated.

Main Responsibilities
  • Event Support: Assists the Audio Visual and Digital Services Manager and Audio Visual and Digital Services Engineer with the delivery of internal and external events, liaising with clients, planning support and arranging for equipment and hire where required, often for large-scale events. This includes pre-production meetings for senior school drama productions to cover all technical elements, such as mic usage, sound effects, complex lighting programming, and scene-by-scene sound and lighting desk programming.
  • Video capture and editing: Capture video footage using professional-grade cameras and equipment during events. Where required, edit videos to enhance content, including trimming, cropping, adding transitions, and applying visual effects.
  • Helpdesk: Support level 1 and level 2 IT helpdesk requests; BYOD, network issues, wireless access issues and general IT-related queries. Manage a wide range of internal and external customer enquiries and requests (e.g., teachers, pupils, departments, WLT and external users requiring AV support).
  • Preventative Maintenance & Project Delivery: Implement AV repairs and maintenance throughout the campus each year and ensure the installation schedule is kept updated. Carry out system administration of AV systems and maintain AV equipment across the school to ensure the technology remains current and fully operational under the guidance of the AV & Digital Services Engineer. Test and calibrate AV equipment to ensure optimal performance and quality.
Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria:

  • A good understanding and knowledge of Audio-Visual Technology including network installations, video editing and production experience
  • Strong work ethic and flexibility to work out of hours to support and manage events
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure within a team and deal with internal and external customers
  • Planning and problem-solving skills
  • Able to work within a team but also independently within the objectives of the team set by AV & Digital Services Manager
  • Physically dexterity is required to support installation work which requires working at height and heavy installations
  • Experience with Mac and Windows platforms
  • Experience working and operating with light and sound desk solutions

Desirable Criteria:

  • Ability to lead a team of pupils
  • Experience in video editing
  • SCQF IT Professional level 6 or similar
  • AV over I.P
Package Description

Location: George Watson’s College, Edinburgh

Contract Type: Full time, 38.75 hours per week

Salary: £28,958 - £32,315 (based on 38.75 hours and 52 weeks)

Benefits: Seven weeks annual leave (two to be taken at Christmas and New Year, automatic enrolment in the contributory support staff defined contribution pension scheme, reduced school fees at George Watson’s College for children of staff, Membership of the Galleon Club (the school’s fitness club))
