Overview

Birkbeck, University of London, is looking for a part-time Associate Tutor to join the School of Natural Sciences and help shape our future in 2026.

As Associate Tutor you will join the teaching team within the School of Natural Sciences and support the module:

  • Research Project, MSc Bioinformatics Projects
  • 10-15 hours of supervision plus marking time per student supervised
  • Scheduled supervision sessions January - September 2026

Your role will be to support teaching, in order to enable students to complete their studies successfully and undertake related course administrative duties as required.

Your main responsibility will be preparation and assisting with studying skills, focused seminar teaching, and providing feedback on formative assessment.

The ideal Associate Tutor will have knowledge of Bioinformatics and experience of teaching and/or MSc project supervision in this field in an area that complements existing expertise. You will be qualified to at least MSc level in this area or demonstrate equivalent professional/industry level experience.

In addition to the criteria specified in the job pack, requirements for selection are:

  • An interest in supervising novel research projects in areas of bioinformatics that would fit with the MSc programme and complement existing provision, potentially including e.g. machine learning / deep learning approaches, systems biology, proteomics or spatial transcriptomics
  • Knowledge of Python and/or R

Salary and Contract

Salary

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £24.55 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6. Payment is for 10-15 hours of project supervision plus marking (£38.40 per student).

Contract
