Job summary

Arcadis is seeking an experienced Associate Technical Director to join the Rail South, West & Wales Business Unit. You will provide technical leadership across major rail structures projects, mentoring teams and guiding design development from concept to delivery.

This role requires Chartered Engineer status, a strong track record in rail projects, and the ability to lead client relationships and be a driving force in regional growth.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer status with a recognised professional institution.
  • Experience leading the technical delivery of rail structures or multi-disciplinary rail projects.
  • Knowledge of design assurance, health and safety, safety-critical processes and rail standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary rail projects, guiding design development and technical assurance.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, stakeholders and project teams, offering trusted advice throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support project and design managers with technical governance, resource planning and safety-critical reviews.
  • Mentor engineers within the team, chair technical reviews and promote collaboration, innovation and health and safety.
  • Contribute to work winning and business growth, strengthening client relationships and expanding market presence.

Role description

We are seeking an experienced Associate Technical Director to join our Rail South, West & Wales Business Unit, supporting the delivery of major rail structures projects across the region. Working as part of our Rail South, West & Wales Civil & Structural Engineering team, you will provide technical leadership across a diverse portfolio including depots and maintenance facilities, bridge replacements, and station upgrade and new-build schemes. This is an excellent opportunity for a collaborative and client-focused leader who enjoys solving complex challenges, developing high‑performing teams and shaping the growth of our rail business.

Role Accountabilities
  • Provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary rail projects, guiding design development, decision-making and technical assurance to deliver high‑quality outcomes.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, stakeholders and project teams, offering trusted advice throughout the project lifecycle and supporting successful delivery.
  • Support project and design managers with technical governance, resource planning, safety‑critical reviews and the effective delivery of complex design work.
  • Mentor and develop engineers within the team, chair technical reviews and promote a culture of collaboration, innovation, continuous improvement and health and safety.
  • Contribute to work winning and business growth, including strengthening client relationships, expanding our market presence and helping shape regional growth strategies.
Qualifications & Experience
  • BEng or MEng in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status through a recognised professional institution.
  • Significant experience leading the technical delivery of rail structures or multidisciplinary rail infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of design assurance, health and safety, safety‑critical processes and relevant rail industry standards, with the ability to undertake the role of Contractor’s Engineering Manager to NR/L2/INI/02009 if required.
  • Proven ability to build client relationships, lead technical teams, support business development and mentor others in a collaborative and inclusive environment.
