The opportunity:

Markel Law LLP is a progressive law firm, regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, and part of the Fortune 500 listed Markel Group (NYSE: MKL). With over 60 lawyers across offices in Manchester, Leeds, London, and Croydon, we handle complex and high-value legal matters across commercial, civil, personal injury, employment, and regulatory law.

We have a great new role for an Associate Solicitor which can be based one day per week from either our Manchester or Leeds office, supporting on both conscientious and non-contentious employment law cases as well as working with some of our larger retail clients.

What you’ll be doing:

You will support clients on a range of contentious and non-contentious employment law matters, including:

  • Advising on ACAS early conciliation, prospects, HR issues, and grievance/disciplinary procedures

  • Drafting and reviewing contracts, handbooks, and settlement agreements

  • Managing Employment Tribunal and EAT claims, from instruction to hearing on behalf of defendants

  • Conducting advocacy, case management, witness statements, and client briefings

  • Delivering training, legal updates, and contributing to cross-team knowledge sharing

  • Building and nurturing strong client relationships

Our must haves:

  • Strong experience in both contentious and non-contentious employment law

  • 7-8 years + PQE experience

  • Practising Certificate as a solicitor or barrister in the UK

  • Excellent communication, drafting and analytical skills

  • Confidence in client-facing roles, with strong commercial awareness

  • Ability to manage a busy caseload with independence and efficiency

  • Commitment to CPD, teamwork and continuous improvement
