JOB PURPOSE

This is an exciting and challenging opportunity for a real estate associate / senior associate in the renewables sector.

The real estate practice at Brodies is top ranked by the independent legal directories, Chambers & Partners and The Legal 500 and is regarded by market commentators as the leading practice in the Scottish market. The practice area continues to expand, and we have an opportunity for a senior associate to join a team that focuses on renewable energy transactions.

The team is involved in many of Scotland's largest and cutting-edge renewables developments and the role holder will have the opportunity to become involved in these deals. Clients include developers, landowners, investors and lenders. The team frequently works alongside London firms delivering advice in relation to Scottish renewables assets. Join the team and you will rarely make a journey across Scotland without seeing developments with which the team has been involved in.

The role will involve working in a fast-paced environment as part of a team servicing renewable energy transactions and supporting junior members of the team.

The technologies with which the team is involved includes wind (offshore and onshore), hydro, pumped storage hydro, tidal, solar, anaerobic digestion, biomass plants, district heating and battery storage. This role also involves dealing with both rural and commercial development on rural land.

Examples of some of the team's ongoing work:

  • 150 MW onshore wind farm in Yell, Shetland with various land interests.
  • London referral work - trading of renewables assets (operational and non-operational)
  • Financing portfolio of hydro schemes at various stages of development.
  • Acting for renewables developers in relation to their onshore wind, hydro, pumped storage hydro, and battery storage projects.
  • Commercial development on rural land.
The role holder will be client-facing and involved in building client relationships on an ongoing basis. An interest in business development and networking and an eager, proactive and ambitious attitude are essential for this role.

CORE TASKS
  • Advising on property aspects of purchase and sale of renewables developments consented, under development and operational. Carrying out due diligence exercises including working with London firms.
  • Being innovative, as you'll be involved in new and evolving technologies where the work can be ground-breaking, and your advice must evolve accordingly.
  • Getting involved in large scale, high value, time critical, newsworthy projects.
  • Understanding complex titles.
  • Dealing with options and leases for renewables projects.
  • Preparing and negotiating certificates of title to support asset transfers and financing.
  • Co-ordinating the property aspects of renewables transactions and liaising with other teams in the firm.
  • Analysing and reporting on documentation for renewables projects.
  • Preparing certificates of title and overview reports for funders.
  • Analysing risk, problem solving and transaction management.
  • Assisting with supervision of work of more junior team members.
  • Involvement in business development activities linked to the team, practice area and firm's strategic plan.
  • Be aware of Brodies' information security policies, and protect information assets from unauthorised access, disclosure, modification, destruction or interference at all times.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
  • Candidates will be a minimum of 4 PQE in a property related role.
  • Previous experience of working on renewable energy transactions.
  • Works effectively with other team members and is able to supervise the work of those less qualified.
  • Takes personal responsibility to learn on the job and keep knowledge up to date and to go the extra mile to develop that knowledge.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
