Job Description:

At Cancer Research UK, we exist to beat cancer

Cancer Research UK’s antibody discovery team has a position available for an Associate Scientist to join us in our vision to bring forward the day when all cancers are conquered.

About CRUK Drug Discovery

As the world’s biggest medical research charity, we’ve helped bring eleven new cancer drugs to market. However, there is still an urgent need to bring more effective treatments to patients faster.

We have recently developed a new approach to therapeutic innovation through Cancer Research Horizons (CRH). We have brought together Cancer Research UK’s established drug discovery teams under one organization and leadership, combining our pipeline of biology, cutting-edge technology platforms, and clinical expertise to:

  • Bring new treatments to patients faster
  • Tackle challenges in discovering cancer drugs by seeking radical ideas and embracing risk

This is a great opportunity for an ambitious, proactive scientist eager to start their career. You will gain exposure to techniques across protein engineering, high throughput screening, and protein science in a flexible environment with support from experienced colleagues. You will contribute to pipeline and technology projects, work in an inclusive environment, and participate in conferences, poster presentations, talks, and publications.

What will I be doing?

This lab-based role involves working with a multidisciplinary drug discovery team to deliver therapeutic antibodies against oncology targets. You will support the delivery of protein reagents for antibody discovery campaigns.

As an Associate Scientist, you will:
  • Generate antibody and antibody fragment reagents using bacterial and mammalian expression systems
  • Perform purification of antibodies and proteins using AKTA and other platforms
  • QC antibodies with SDS-PAGE, HPLC, and Western blotting
  • Maintain inventory and support supply of reagents
  • Perform molecular biology tasks such as restriction digest and cloning
  • Operate laboratory equipment
What are you looking for?

The role suits recent graduates with lab experience or current lab technicians seeking to expand their skills. Candidates should demonstrate:

  • A relevant degree
  • Knowledge of protein expression and purification methods
  • Knowledge of biochemical and cell-based assays
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques for constructing expression vectors
  • Experience with protein purification and AKTA is desirable
  • Experience with mammalian transient expression is desirable
  • Interest in learning phage display technology

Our values are:

  • Bold: Act with ambition, courage, and determination
  • Credible: Act with rigour and professionalism
  • Human: Have a positive impact on people
  • Together: Act inclusively and collaboratively

We encourage candidates to embody these values to drive progress against our mission to beat cancer.

If you're interested but unsure if you have the right skills, we still welcome your application.

What will I gain?

We offer a supportive environment, benefits, career development opportunities, and tools to help balance work and personal life. Explore our benefits on our careers webpage.
