PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

  • We are currently seeking an advisory (non-contentious) lawyer to support the team's ongoing growth in our public procurement team.

THE TEAM

  • Our procurement team is a recognised market leader, ranked in band 1 (UK-wide) in the chambers directory for many years. the team delivers first-rate client service, covering both advisory and disputes work across the full range of procurement regulations.
  • Our advisory work includes numerous nationally and internationally significant projects, with a particular focus on government contracts, transport (rail, bus, ports and aviation), utilities (water, electricity, gas and heat), defence, healthcare, regeneration and wider development.
  • Our advisory team also works side-by-side with our specialist procurement disputes lawyers, providing technical and strategic input into contentious matters, including behind the scenes settlements and major court cases.
  • Much of the team's current workload involves advising clients on the transition to the new Procurement Act 2023.

What To Expect In This Role

The role requires teamwork, enthusiasm, and a desire to build strong technical expertise. The work will involve the following (working as part of a supportive, multi-lawyer team):

  • Giving strategic advice, to authorities / utilities and their contracting partners, on procurement issues such as the availability of exemptions to make direct awards and contract modifications
  • Drafting procurement documents, including adverts, selection questionnaires and invitations
  • Advising authorities / utilities on the design and conduct of procurement processes
  • Advising bidders on their tenders, including resolving issues that arise during the course of the process
  • Working with the disputes team to advise on the merits of procurement claims, from a claimant, defendant and interested party perspective
  • Supporting the disputes team in the preparation of claims / defences
  • Running the procurement workstreams on major projects being led by colleagues specialising in IT, outsourcing, transport, utilities, construction, real estate and defence
  • Supporting and leading business development initiatives (as appropriate to levels of qualification and interest) including client publications, articles and speaking engagements (including delivering both internal and external procurement training)

YOUR AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE

To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following:

  • Qualified Lawyer; in the region of 1 to 4 years + post-qualifying experience and ideally ready to grow into a specialist role as part of our wider commercial team. For us it's about getting the right people to join our team.
  • Recent experience and / or strong interest in public and / or utilities procurement law gained at a regional, national or international firm
  • Enthusiasm for developing further specialist procurement and sector expertise
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills with a focus on teamwork and collaboration
  • A strong client-service focus and a commercial outlook
