The role
We are looking to recruit several Associate Lecturers in the areas of Data Analysis & Data Management in the School of Computing and Communications at the Open University.
The position is part-time (0.09) Full Time Equivalent, amounting on average to around ½ to 1 day per week and would involve teaching on one or more modules. There are immediate teaching needs on TM351 Data Management and Analysis and there is the possibility of teaching other modules within the School.
The position is home-based and has no fixed core hours. It is a two year fixed-term appointment, with a probation period of two years. The annual salary and workload are fixed, but there are significant workload peaks and troughs, mainly linked to providing marking and assessment feedback. This will include end of module marking tasks. Other tasks will be required such as focused student support (individual and forum), peer mentoring and working with the module team on assessment activities and quality improvement. Some evening and weekend work will be required. The appropriate level of FTE will be discussed at interview, and there is the possibility of increasing the FTE later. The starting full-time salary is £38,249 paid pro rata based on your FTE. Although most of the teaching occurs between October and June, the position is paid over the full calendar year.
The contract will start from October 2025.
Appointments to the position will be subject to student registrations.
This module will provide students with a practical, legal and ethical understanding of how to access, query, manage and explore data collections, using traditional relational databases and contemporary NoSQL approaches. Using real-world datasets, standard software packages, data visualisation techniques and summarising data views, students will learn how to explore data collections in order to answer questions about the world and develop an appreciation of user needs surrounding data systems.
