Job description

Rockstar North is seeking an Associate Lead UX Researcher who is passionate about understanding players, evaluating the gaming experience, and will work closely with the rest of the development team to create action on insights. The successful candidate will join a nascent and growing UX team and help execute research activities on Rockstar’s games and core products.

This is a full-time, permanent and in-office position based in Rockstar’s state-of-the-art game development studio in Edinburgh, Scotland.

WHAT WE DO
  • The Rockstar Games UX Research Team run studies to build on the company's understanding of how players think, feel, and act while playing our games or using our publishing products (e.g., websites).
  • We value research excellence, ensuring every study yields high quality, actionable findings that our stakeholders can use to inform their decisions.
  • We collaborate with partner teams across the company, including game design, art, code, production, marketing, analytics, and consumer insights.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manage, mentor, and develop a small team of researchers and research operations staff, providing direction and guidance on their work.
  • Work to understand our game development stakeholders and integrate into the production process.
  • Work with the Senior Manager to develop team strategies and project roadmaps, ensuring research is done on the most impactful topics, and delivered in the right way at the right time.
  • Collaborate with UX Research team members and partner teams like Analytics and Tools to advance the team’s capabilities and standards.
  • Where necessary, contribute directly to research planning, execution, and delivery.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 6+ years of experience in UX research in the games industry, ideally working inside a game studio or publisher.
  • 2+ years of experience managing a small team.
  • Masters or PhD in Psychology, Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Computer Science or related field, or equivalent industry experience.
SKILLS
  • Using research rigorously and creatively to help game developers achieve their creative intent.
  • Understanding of game developers, their ambitions and constraints.
  • Building trust, consensus, and buy-in with stakeholders at all levels of game development.
  • Thinking strategically and leading a team to execute on the strategy.
  • Directly managing and supporting the development of other research professionals,
  • Improving existing, and defining new, UX research standards, processes, and tools.
  • Working cross-functionally with other insights partners, such as Analytics.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment, navigating organizational complexity and ambiguity.
  • Detail-oriented and highly efficient.
  • Independent, entrepreneurial spirit, with the ability to work within the established rules, or to break them, depending on the context.

PLUSES

Please note that these are desirable skills and are not required to apply for the position.

  • Deep knowledge of Rockstar’s games, especially online aspects.
  • Knowledge of inferential statistics.
  • Experience with programming and/or developing tools for UX research.
