Flexible Working: This role is primarily office-based, most of the work is undertaken in the office. We offer flexible working hours, including options for compressed and part-time shifts. While working from home isn’t guaranteed, it might be possible on occasion, based on personal and business needs. Please note that there are occasional set training periods requiring classroom-based attendance, which might impact the flexible working arrangements.

At GCHQ, we unlock the complex world of data and communications to keep the UK and its citizens safe, both in the real world and online. Working closely with our British Intelligence partners in MI5 and MI6, we protect the UK from threats including serious organised crime, terrorism, and cyber-attacks. A role at GCHQ means you’ll have varied and fascinating work in a supportive and encouraging environment that emphasises teamwork.

Our Infrastructure Engineers maintain and develop innovative systems that enable real-world operations. On this 18-month learning journey, you’ll do a mix of classroom, virtual and on-the-job training as you turn your passion for tech into a rewarding career. With our unwavering support you’ll gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to become a fully integrated member of our vibrant team. This role will enable you to unlock your potential and ensure our tech infrastructure remains safe and secure.

There’s no single ‘type’ of person we hire. You might be a school leaver, or a STEM graduate, someone looking to change careers, or returning to work after a break. What matters most is your genuine passion for technology and your eagerness to learn new skills while developing a career as part of our welcoming tech community.

While no prior experience in IT is required to apply, candidates should have an aptitude and enthusiasm for technology. Whether you’re a school leaver, a STEM graduate, someone looking to change careers, or returning to work after a break, all you need is a GCSE grade C/4 (or above) in Maths, or an equivalent qualification. We also encourage candidates with experience to apply. If you have a background in IT or related fields, your experience will be highly valued.

Comfortable with technical information and eager to put it to use, you’ll be excited to apply your knowledge and skills in an environment that embraces fresh ideas and innovative thinking. From day one, you’ll receive dedicated training and development, along with all the support you need to settle into life at GCHQ. Plus, you’ll be encouraged to pursue all kinds of skill development to grow your career. This includes access to funded learning resources, invitations to join internal knowledge-sharing groups, and chances to gain industry-recognised qualifications such as ISC² CISSP, AWS Solution Architect, or CISCO CCNA. Additionally, you’ll obtain the evidence needed to apply for professional registration with the IET or BCS.

And with great benefits, including flexible working options, you’ll enjoy a work-life balance that means you don’t need to compromise on what matters to you. You can find out more about life at GCHQ by visiting our website.

The application window for the Associate Infrastructure Engineer role will open on Friday, 23rd May, at 10 a.m. If you’re from an ethnic minority background, or identify as a woman, we’d be particularly keen to invite you to register your interest for our upcoming events. Please note that we’re confining registrations of interest to these groups only, due to their current under-representation in our workforce.

Before you Register

To work for us, you need to be a British citizen or hold dual British nationality. You can read our full eligibility criteria here.

These roles require the highest security clearance, known as Developed Vetting (DV). It’s something everyone in the UK Intelligence Community undertakes. You can find out more about the vetting process here.

If you meet the demographic criteria outlined above, you’ll be invited to several online events as part of the registration of interest, before the application window opens. These Events include Insight Events, where you can learn more about the role, our inclusive and supportive culture, hear from real staff, and have the chance to ask questions (please attend only one Insight Event). We are also offering a Skills Event, which will provide general tips about completing a job application and preparing for an interview. These one-hour events are scheduled to take place on:

Insight Events – Wednesday 21st May – 1pm and 5pm

Skills Event – Thursday 22nd May - 12:30pm

We look forward to seeing you.

Please note that a registration of interest does not constitute a job application, nor will such registration have any bearing upon the recruitment process itself. Any individuals who register their interest and who subsequently decide to apply will need to complete an application form once the window for applications has opened. Once the application window has opened, we’ll welcome applications from all candidates, regardless of their ethnic background, gender, disability, and/or any other characteristic(s). Please check our nationality eligibility criteria requirements.

All applications will be assessed solely on merit.
