Job summary

WSP in the UK & Ireland in Edinburgh is seeking an Associate Geotechnical Engineer to join our team. You will provide technical leadership across complex geotechnical projects and act as a senior technical authority, directing ground models, design solutions and technical deliverables.

You will manage programmes, budgets and risk, build trusted client relationships, and lead bids and proposals to secure future work.

Qualifications

• Substantial background in geotechnical engineering and ground risk management.
• Proven experience leading multidisciplinary projects with technical excellence.
• Strong client and stakeholder management skills and relationship building.
• Chartered status with ICE or Geological Society, or equivalent qualification.
• Ability to manage budgets, programmes, quality and risk on complex projects.
• Collaborative, influential leadership style across disciplines.

We are looking for an Associate Geotechnical Engineer to join our existing team in Edinburgh.

A Little More About Your Role…

• Providing technical and operational leadership across a portfolio of complex geotechnical and multidisciplinary projects, ensuring the delivery of high-quality and commercially successful outcomes.
• Acting as a senior technical authority, leading the development and assurance of ground models, geotechnical assessments, design solutions and technical deliverables.
• Directing and reviewing advanced geotechnical analysis and design for foundations, retaining structures, earthworks, slopes, tunnels and other geotechnical assets.
• Taking responsibility for project and portfolio performance, including programme, budget, resource planning, quality management, risk and contractual requirements.
• Developing trusted relationships with key clients, understanding their strategic priorities and identifying opportunities to expand our services and secure future work.
• Leading bids and proposals, including the development of technical approaches, delivery strategies, resource plans and commercially competitive fee submissions.
• Providing leadership, line management, coaching and technical mentorship to engineers and engineering geologists, supporting succession planning and professional development.
• Working closely with senior leaders to support team strategy, workload planning, recruitment, utilisation and the continued growth of the geotechnical business.
• Building effective relationships across disciplines, sectors and regions to develop integrated solutions and access the full capability of WSP for our clients.
• Championing technical excellence, innovation, sustainability, health and safety, and the effective use of digital and 3D data throughout project delivery.

What We Will Be Looking For You To Demonstrate…

• A substantial technical background in geotechnical engineering, engineering geology and ground risk management, with experience leading the delivery of complex projects.
• Strong technical expertise in geotechnical interpretation, analysis and design, together with the ability to review, challenge and approve high-quality technical outputs.
• A proven track record of leading projects and multidisciplinary teams while managing scope, programme, resources, commercial performance, quality and risk.
• Strong commercial awareness, with experience preparing proposals, managing project finances and contributing to the successful development of new business.
• Excellent client and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to act as a senior representative of WSP and develop long-term professional relationships.
• Experience providing technical and managerial leadership to teams, including mentoring, coaching, workload management and supporting the development of colleagues.
• The ability to identify market opportunities, support strategic planning and contribute to the growth and direction of a successful geotechnical business.
• A collaborative and influential leadership style, with the ability to work effectively across disciplines, locations and sectors.
• Chartered status with a relevant professional institution, such as the ICE or Geological Society, or an equivalent recognised professional qualification.
