A Little More About Your Role

WSP has a new opportunity for a Principal to Technical Director Level Geochemist / Hydrogeochemist to join our UK & Ireland Mine Water Team on a full-time basis based in the UK or Ireland.

We are looking for an experienced consultant to provide consulting services and deliver geochemical and the geochemical component of multi-disciplinary studies to our clients. This role focuses on the geochemical characterisation and assessment of water-rock interactions for predicting, preventing, and managing metal leaching and acid rock drainage in mining projects. You will work on various local and international projects, applying your geochemical expertise across sectors. The ideal candidate will have consultancy experience and a successful client management record, preferably in mining.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Project coordination and client liaison nationally and internationally
  • Oversight, mentoring, and review of mine water and geochemical studies
  • Collaborate with international geochemists and multidisciplinary teams on projects including permitting, baseline and feasibility studies, operational support, and reclamation in mining and other industries
  • Understand regulations and best practice guidelines in the UK/Ireland and globally
  • Design geochemical characterisation plans aligned with regulatory and client needs
  • Manage geochemical and water quality datasets, including QA/QC
  • Interpret and report laboratory and field test results for environmental media
  • Conduct impact and risk assessments with surface water and groundwater professionals; understand source term development
  • Prepare and deliver technical reports and presentations to clients
  • Travel for project site work within the UK/Ireland and overseas as needed
  • Support business development through proposals, marketing, and conference participation
  • Collaborate within the Mining Team to strategize and meet business goals
  • Manage projects, ensuring compliance with business systems
  • Promote health and safety awareness, adhere to policies, and raise safety issues
What We Are Looking For
  • Advanced degree (MSc or Ph.D) in geochemistry, hydrogeochemistry, applied or environmental geology, or chemistry
  • Knowledge of geochemical and mass transport modelling codes (PHREEQC, MIN3P, Geochemist’s Workbench) and water quality modelling (GoldSim) is advantageous
  • Experience in developing geochemical characterisation and modelling studies for mining projects globally
  • Experience with large geochemical datasets, including quality control and reporting
  • Passion for innovation and solving complex challenges
  • Strong technical writing skills; proficiency in English; additional language skills (French or Spanish) valued
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Professional registration or progress towards it; commitment to CPD
  • Understanding of health and safety culture in workplace and field environments
