Job Description:

Location: Remote first, flexible working arrangements, with all UK based locations considered. Our flexible office collaboration spaces, for those wishing to use them, are in London, Bristol, Birmingham and Exeter.

Term: Permanent, Full Time (40 hours per week, or by agreement)

Salary: Competitive, dependent on knowledge, experience and skills.

Grade: Associate Director (Managing a team of transport planning consultants and reporting to the Managing Director)

Job Overview

We seek candidates with expertise in sustainable transport and spatial planning, including net zero development, to lead our consultancy functions. Experience in leading local transport plans, active travel, and policy development is advantageous. Proven track record in sales and tenders is essential, with targets for work winning.

Key Requirements

  • 5+ years’ consultancy experience, including at least 3 tendering and work winning.
  • Evidence of securing over £500k in opportunities in the past year.
  • Strong UK client network with potential for direct commissions.
  • Experience leading Local Transport Plans, Bus Service Improvement Plans, and/or LCWIPs within the last 5 years.
  • Management experience of multiple staff and projects (3+ years).

City Science, founded in 2015, is dedicated to decarbonisation. We collaborate across transport planning, modelling, energy, and data science to deliver innovative solutions, working with clients like Oxfordshire County Council, England’s Economic Heartland, and National Highways.

Our team develops digital tools such as Cadence and decarbonisation platforms to enhance project delivery.

The Role

The Associate Director will lead growth in sustainability and transport, represent City Science externally, secure new business, and manage a portfolio of projects. Collaboration with senior leadership and R&D teams is key to leveraging research and delivering client solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead transport and net zero offerings.
  • Manage resources, staff development, and project delivery.
  • Oversee technical reports, modelling, and analysis.
  • Support automation and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to business strategy and regional growth.
  • Lead business development, including proposals and client engagement.

Candidate Profile

You are ambitious, proactive, and client-oriented, with deep technical knowledge in transport, sustainability, and decarbonisation. You have extensive consultancy experience, excellent communication skills, and a proven ability to win and deliver projects. Resilience, entrepreneurial spirit, and strategic thinking are essential.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum 2.1 degree in a technical/scientific field.
  • Experience with public sector tenders and high-growth environments.
  • Knowledge of zero carbon transport and development.
  • Experience with Local Transport Plans, GIS, mapping, and visualisation.
  • People management skills.
