Job description

Associate Dialysis Support Worker - Cardiff North Dialysis Unit

We have a fantastic opportunity for a reliable and motivated individual with an NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or Clinical Support or a previously registered nurse with a lapsed NMC registration to join our team in a rewarding patient-facing role.

Joining us as an Associate Dialysis Support Worker, you will be supported to complete additional NVQ level 3 modules in Clinical Support (if needed) and Dialysis, delivered in-house. Upon successful completion, you will progress to a fully qualified Dialysis Support Worker.

Working hours: 37.5 hours per week. Monday to Saturday on a rolling rota. No Sunday or night shifts!

3 x 11.5 hour shifts per week plus an additional top up shift every 4 weeks

Long Day = 06:45 - 18:15

Salary: The starting salary for the role is £23,970. Upon successful completion of the training and promotion to Dialysis Support Worker, this will increase to £24,432 with potential further anniversary increments thereafter.

Main duties of the job

Whilst working towards your qualification, you'll gain hands-on experience in the unit by undertaking a range of Healthcare Assistant responsibilities, including:

  • Monitor and record patients weights pre and post dialysis.
  • Prepare and serve patients with refreshments.
  • Preparation of the clinical area.
  • Maintain stocks and supplies within the treatment areas.

Main Responsibilities as a Dialysis Support Worker:

  • Prepare equipment for treatments.
  • Connect/disconnect patients from haemodialysis including access to haemodialysis fistula/graft.
  • Patient review (pre and post dialysis).
  • Documentation of all patient care delivered.
  • Support care plans for patients.
  • Manual handling of patients, including escorting to wards/transport.
  • Safe disposal of clinical and sharps waste, recycling and general waste.

What you need to succeed:

  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Health & Social Care or Clinical Support.
  • Experience working in a clinical care setting (either through work or placement).
  • Team player with the ability to work unsupervised using your own initiative.
  • Able to demonstrate empathy and sympathy.
  • Willingness to learn and perform clinical skills.
  • Flexible to cover the needs of the patients/unit.
  • Be detail focused with the ability to meet daily deadlines.

Key Responsibilities and Duties While Undergoing SupervisedTraining:

To develop both practical skills and theoretical knowledge inthe pre and post dialysis patient assessment:-

-accurate assessment , calculation and documentation of fluid status and goal.

-accurate assessment and documentation of patients blood pressure, pulse andtemperature (as required).

-to undertake and successfully complete the NVQ Level 3 modules in ClinicalSupport & Dialysis

To demonstrate accurate and timely patient documentation:-

-maintain accurate hourly records of treatment during dialysis.

-Ensure all work is countersigned by allocated qualified nurse on duty.

To develop both practical skills and theoretical knowledge inthe AVF/AVG vascular access care of a dialysis patient:-

-to demonstrate a safe & efficient placement and removal of arterio-venousfistula needles.

-Associate DSW Staff are permitted to administer subcutaneous anesthetic forAVF/AVG

-To demonstrate a safe blood sampling technique as per Avitum policy andprocedure.

-Associate DSW Staff are not permitted to undertake care of any patients withCVC access.

To develop both competent practical skills and theoreticalknowledge in the connection and disconnection care of an AVF/AVG dialysispatient:-

-to demonstrate a safe and competent dialysis access connection.

-to demonstrate a safe and competent dialysis access disconnection.

-Associate DSW Staff are not permitted to administer any Intravenous medicationduring

dialysis.

Preparation of the clinical area:-

-to ensure dialysis area and equipment is safe and ready for use.

-to ensure dialysis prescription data is entered correctly.

-to provide a safe and compliant disposal of clinical and general waste.

To demonstrate efficient use of dialysis consumables.

To continue expanding knowledge base and skills in relation tothe care of renal patients.

To provide general support to the unit routine, escortingpatients to the wards, blood specimens and pharmacy errands.

To take on the Healthcare Assistant role when required.

To work within the Avitum Policies and Procedures and adhere tothe Quality Manual and Environmental, Health and Safety Guidelines.

Qualifications
  • NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care/Clinical Care or equivalent
  • Willingness to undertake NVQ Level 3 additional modules in Clinical Care (if required) and Dialysis
