Job summary

WSP in Leeds is seeking an experienced Associate Structural Engineer to lead design delivery on UK and international multi-disciplinary projects, from concept through to handover. You will manage projects, guide technical teams, and shape sustainable structural solutions across materials.

You will mentor junior engineers, contribute to business development, and act as a principal client contact, ensuring high standards and adherence to programme and budget.

Qualifications

  • Proven track record of successful design delivery on major building projects.
  • Project management and technical delivery leadership on medium to large schemes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills for communication with project teams, stakeholders and clients.
  • Strong commercial and technical management experience.
  • Experience in team management including line management.
  • Lead client contact for consultancy services and client relationships.
  • Degree or HNC/HND qualification in a relevant discipline.
  • Chartered MIStructE / MICE.
  • Solid experience in structural engineering design across all materials.
  • Knowledge of national codes and standards.
  • Proficiency with ETABS, RAM Structural System, Tekla Structural Designer and Tedds.
  • Experience with Revit, Rhino and Grasshopper is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Develop innovative and sustainable designs for UK and international multi-disciplinary projects, including high-rise, stadia, urban regeneration, healthcare, commercial/mixed-use and data centres.
  • Lead technical design on projects from concept through to detailed design, coordinating with architects and specialists.
  • Participate in and lead tender bids and business development opportunities.
  • Participate in fee agreements and manage the commercial position of projects.
  • Provide independent judgement to resolve technical issues.
  • Mentor and develop junior team members toward Chartership.
  • Own and lead the design process, guiding the team to meet programmes and provide technical review.
  • Take a strategic lead on large multi-disciplinary projects and provide bespoke structural solutions.
  • Build strong relationships with other WSP disciplines, consultants and clients.
  • Manage processes to resolve technical issues and risks cost-effectively.
  • Provide sustainable structural solutions from concept to construction.
  • Advise clients on sustainable design, net-zero carbon, MMC and DfMA.

Job Overview

WSP is looking for an experienced structural engineer to join its Building Structures team in Leeds as a full‑time Associate. The role includes project management, technical leadership, and delivery of schemes from inception to handover.

Responsibilities
  • Develop innovative and sustainable designs from concept for a wide range of challenging UK and international multi‑disciplinary projects, including high‑rise, stadia, urban regeneration, healthcare, commercial/mixed‑use, major refurbishment, and data centres.
  • Serve as key technical leader on multi‑disciplinary design projects from concept through to detailed design, coordinating with architects, engineers and specialist consultants.
  • Participate in and lead tender bids and business development opportunities.
  • Participate in fee agreements and manage the commercial position of projects.
  • Exercise independent judgement to resolve technical issues.
  • Mentor and develop junior team members working towards their Chartership.
  • Own and lead the design process, encouraging the team to deliver solutions that meet agreed programmes and providing technical review, mentoring and advice.
  • Take a strategic lead on large multi‑disciplinary projects and provide bespoke structural solutions to niche and architectural‑led concept designs.
  • Build strong working relationships with other WSP disciplines, external design consultants, stakeholders and clients.
  • Manage processes to ensure technical issues and risks are resolved in a timely, cost‑effective manner.
  • Provide sustainable structural solutions from concept through to detailed design and construction.
  • Advise clients on sustainable design, net‑zero carbon, MMC and DfMA.
Qualifications
  • Proven track record of successful design delivery, ideally on major, multi‑disciplinary building projects, particularly at concept and inception stages.
  • Project management and technical delivery leadership experience on medium to large schemes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, capable of communicating effectively with project teams, stakeholders and clients.
  • Strong commercial and technical management experience, using appropriate business tools.
  • Experience in team management, including line management and day‑to‑day operations.
  • Experience as a lead client contact for consultancy services, fostering excellent client relationships.
  • Degree or HNC/HND qualification in a relevant discipline.
  • Chartered status (MIStructE / MICE).
  • Solid experience in structural engineering design across all material types.
  • Detailed knowledge of national codes and standards.
  • Clear understanding of the design process, brief/scope documents, concept development and calculation production.
  • Proficiency with structural design software such as ETABS, RAM Structural System, Tekla Structural Designer and Tedds.
  • Experience with Revit, Rhino and Grasshopper is beneficial.
