Based: Bury Church of England High School

Contract: Permanent, all year round

Required: September 2025

We are seeking a committed and inspiring teacher and leader to join our team as Associate Assistant Headteacher, with responsibility for both leading our humanities faculty and taking a strategic lead on the Christian distinctiveness of our school.

First and foremost, we are looking for an excellent Humanities teacher—someone who is passionate about their subject and still thriving in the classroom, but who also has the desire and skills to support others in becoming exceptional practitioners. You will have the exciting opportunity to bring together three departments—each led by its own Head of Department—into a united, collaborative, and high-performing Humanities team.

At the same time, this role offers a chance to make a deep and lasting contribution to the Christian life and vision of the school. Following a highly successful SIAMS inspection, we are now looking to go even further in embedding our Christian distinctiveness into the daily life of our school, ensuring that our values, worship, and ethos continue to shape the experience and development of every pupil and member of staff.

This is a unique opportunity for a leader who is equally passionate about curriculum excellence and spiritual development, and who is excited to help shape the future of our school community in both areas.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Has a sound and developed knowledge of your subject and of its examination specifications.
  • Has the ability to teach students throughout the age and ability range.
  • Can create and maintain a disciplined and stimulating environment in which all students are well motivated and learn.
  • Monitors students’ progress and create opportunities for all students to reach their full potential.
  • Establishes good working relationships with students and colleagues and with the wider school community.
  • Attends and contributes to departmental meetings and contribute to departmental policies and developments.
  • Can manage a year group and work closely with other Heads of Year to implement behaviour policies and support strategies.
  • Will work with curriculum leaders and classroom teachers to monitor academic progress.
  • Contributes to whole-school development through pastoral SLT meetings.

Your Main Duties:

  • To lead and develop a cohesive and ambitious Humanities faculty, fostering a shared vision and culture of high expectations across subjects, and ensuring that all pupils make excellent progress, enjoy their learning, and become thoughtful, well-educated individuals.
  • To take strategic leadership of the school’s Christian distinctiveness, embedding the school’s values and ethos across all aspects of school life, and strengthening its identity as a faith-based community where all pupils and staff can flourish.
  • To contribute to the wider life of the school as a senior leader, including through high-quality teaching, pastoral oversight as a form tutor, undertaking duties, and modelling the values and behaviours expected of pupils and staff alike.

What We Offer:

  • Continuous Professional Development (CPD): Access to National College training, subject-specific CPD, leadership pathways, and mentoring programs.
  • Career Progression: Clear pathways for growth, from early careers to leadership roles. We use a ‘touchbase’ informal approach to focus on professional development as well as an annual career conversation with your manager!
  • Wellbeing & Support: Leadership training focused on wellbeing, mental health resources, and staff networks.
  • Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI): Commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace, with ongoing EDI training and initiatives.
  • Long weekend off in November for teachers and term time support staff!
  • Automatic pay progression for teachers – we don’t have performance related appraisals and pay reviews!
  • Generous annual leave entitlement of 25 days for all year-round support staff. This increases to 28 days after 5 years!
  • A paid premium to a Healthcare Cash Plan to claim back contributions towards dental, optical and other medical costs via UK Healthcare.
  • 24/7 access to an Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Amazing benefits and discounts via UK Healthcare.
  • Fantastic facilities.
  • A lunch allowance for those colleagues volunteering to assist in lunchtime duties or activities.
