Job description
Overview

The Assistive Technology Service is responsible for the assessment, provision and maintenance of environmental control systems (ECS) installed in the homes of people with severe and complex disabilities to maximise personal independence and reduce dependence on their carer. The systems are individually prescribed and configured to suit the needs of the user, enabling them to continue to live in their own home with enhanced independence, security and quality of life. The service is commissioned by NHS England and covers a wide geographic area, including 5 London boroughs, Surrey and West Sussex. The post requires effective communication with a large number of Social Services and care agents with differing policies and systems.

The successful applicant will join St George’s University Hospital’s NHS Foundation Trust as a Band 5 Assistive Technology Engineer, based at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton, to provide assessment, installation and maintenance of environmental controls throughout the commissioned area. A driver with a full license is essential and access to the applicant’s own vehicle with appropriate work insurance is required.

Responsibilities
  • Provide highly specialised Environmental Control services to adults and children with complex disabilities to improve independence, quality of life, safety and participation, working autonomously and being accountable for own professional actions.
  • Manage the design and development of custom electronic assistive technology devices.
  • Provide and maintain equipment as required by patients to meet their needs, adapting equipment to changing needs.
  • Deliver services directly to a wide region and manage provision of services throughout the commissioned area.
  • Independently manage and complete refurbishment of equipment to a high standard.
  • Manage stock within the equipment store, including stock levels, tidiness, and consideration for health and safety and infection control.
  • Provide expert and complex technical input around acceptance testing, evaluation and provision of devices.
  • Deliver the service in an independent, unbiased, cost-effective and accountable way.
  • Play a key role in service development, implementing changes and monitoring standards of practice.
  • Provide advice and training in assistive technology to professionals within the region, as well as patients, carers and family members.
  • Promote the development and application of assistive technology products.
  • Be responsible for aspects of service policy, planning, organisation, development and delivery.
  • Ensure resources are managed and monitored monthly to meet client need throughout the financial year.
  • Work collaboratively with the Service Lead to meet organisational objectives and develop service policies and procedures.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Previous clinical engineering experience is desirable; candidates should be working towards an appropriate qualification and be a member (or eligible for membership) of the Register of Clinical Technologists, or willing to work towards.
  • Must be a driver with a full license and have access to a vehicle with appropriate insurance for work purposes.
  • Willingness to participate in training of others, CPD, audits and evaluation of products.
