Job description

Braintree District Council has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Waste Manager to join our operations team in Braintree, Essex.

Location: Braintree, Essex, CM7 9HB

Salary: £39,868 to £44,068 per annum

Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent

The Role:

Working alongside a colleague Assistant Manager, you will oversee the daily operations of the Council's Waste Services, including refuse, recycling, commercial waste, and the Waste Transfer Station. A key part of this role involves ensuring compliance with statutory legislation and policies, as well as managing and supervising the Waste team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supporting, motivating, and developing front-line employees
  • Managing performance and absences, including sickness monitoring and appropriate actions
  • Conducting investigations and presenting findings at formal meetings
  • Collaborating with internal and external partners, including other local authorities, on initiatives to improve service delivery
  • Managing external contractors involved in service delivery
  • Overseeing the operation of the Waste Transfer Station, including submitting quarterly statutory returns to the Environment Agency and DEFRA
About You:
  • Significant experience managing people and operational teams in a similar environment
  • Extensive knowledge of waste management services, including vehicle management
  • Qualifications such as ILM Level 3, Level 4 Certificate of Technical Competence in Waste Management Operations (COTC), and CPC in National Road Transport Operations (preferred)
  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and team-working skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to manage a busy and fluctuating workload
  • Inspiring leader with the ability to motivate teams
